Science TB pg A76-79
 Seeds grow in conifer cones as well as in the flowers of flowering
plants. Seeds are protected by fruit. Inside each seed is a tiny plant.
 For a seed to grow it needs warmth, water, and air.
 Bees, birds, and bats feed on nectar. Nectar is a sweet liquid in
flowers. These animals help spread pollen and helps flowers form
seeds.
 Seeds are spread by fruit falling to the ground, animals also help by
gathering and burying nuts, as well as catching seeds on their fur and
dropping them as they move around. Wind and water also spread
seeds. Humans spread seeds when they get caught on clothing and fall
off as the human moves around, too.
 Not all plants have flowers that form fruit and seeds.
 Spores are smaller than seeds. They are made from one cell and can
only be seen with a microscope.
 Spores contain food and can be carried by wind, water, and animals.
They grow in capsules.
 When the spores are mature the capsules dry up and open. The spores
are then released into the air to scatter.
 Some plants have adaptations that allow them to grow in other ways.
Spider plants send out buds on a type of stem called a runner. Tulips
grow from bulbs which is a bud that grows underground. They are
planted in the fall to have flowers grow in the spring.
 Some plants can grow from a piece of stem put in water. The roots
grow and then are planted in soil.
 Grafting is a process in which people cut a stem of one plant and join
it to a slice in another plant. This is used to make a new plant. The
joined stem uses the roots of the other plant to get water and nutrients.
 Potatoes are tubers. They are dug up to eat. Potatoes have buds or
“eyes” which can make a new plant.
