Unit 3 - Notes: Earthquake Waves
Earthquake – a displacement of the Earth’s
surface (lithosphere & asthenosphere) resulting
in waves being sent out from the point of origin.
1. Wave Properties:
Types of waves – earthquakes generate
compressional (P) and shear (S) waves.
Velocities – in the same medium, P waves
travel at a greater velocity (_________) than S
waves. However, the velocities of seismic
waves depend upon the physical properties of
the material through which the waves travel
(medium). Higher density media result in a
higher velocity of wave propagation.
Transmission – compressional (___) waves are
transmitted through solids AND fluids. Shear
(____) waves are transmitted only through
solids.
