Star of the Sea Catholic School Speech Arts Festival 2014 ~ Grade 4 Our grade 4 class this year must present a Bible reading, picture book story and a poem, which they will practice in class and learn the proper pacing and reading style for these categories. Picture Book Read Aloud: Students will choose a picture book to read aloud to the class. It can be an old favourite, or something new they liked. This will showcase their oral fluency as well as crowd engagement through changes in voice and expression. Bible Reading: Students will receive the bible reading selections in advance in order to practice both at home and at school. During the class presentations, I will choose one of the readings for them to read aloud to the class. Poetry Recital Poems must be recited from memory, with no props or costumes, and minimal gestures where appropriate. Poems must be a minimum of one minute and a maximum of three minutes. The selection must be poetry, not prose, and must be approved by the teacher no later than February 1st. If the published work is longer than the time indicated above, the stanzas may be omitted and marked as such on the adjudicator’s copy. The published work, or photocopy of the piece must be presented at the time of presentation. If it is a copy then it must be properly referenced (book, publisher, date, page, etc.) This is the same for Internet poems. *Our in class poetry recital will be March 3rd, so the poems must be memorized by then* Group Performance: Both grade 4 classes will be performing a group piece on March 7th for our in school group speech arts festival. All parents are encouraged to come watch. Fractured Fairytale Plays: Performance is March 14th at 1pm, and all parents are welcome to watch our students put on 3 Fractured Fairy Tale Plays which they have self directed, outfitted and practiced. Optional: (if your child wants to compete in the Regional Speech Arts Competition) Narrative/Story Telling The maximum time allowed is 3-5 minutes. Students must submit an original story and tell it to the audience, not read it, using dramatic expression. ** Please note, that many of the students wrote a Fractured Fairly Tale in class and are welcome to use this story if they choose to learn and re-tell. Character Recitation The purpose of this category is to encourage children to read good literature. This will be an oral recitation and may include props or costumes. Dramatic expression is encouraged. The time allowed is 3-5 minutes. Select a scene from a novel, famous speech, or play monologue. Recite the selection as the main character, and use the original text. Minimal re-writing is permitted to help set the scene or to incorporate dialogue with another character. Participants could be introduced by someone else to enable the participant to remain in character for the performance. The published work must be available to the teacher. Persuasive Speech The time allowed for the speech is 3-5 minutes. The speech may be on any topic of interest to the student and must be an original composition. Students may use cue cards only (recipe size) and a podium, if desired. Cue cards are to contain only the main ideas, not the whole speech. Students may not read from their cue cards, they are for reference only. This speech must be persuasive, and not tell a story. Sincerely, Mrs D’Mello
