Fourth 9 Weeks Sixth Grade 14 -15 GMS Exploratory Team Art Areas for CORE Integration Band Essential Questions Please identify the subjects above each area for integration listed. What is Intonation? Why is it important? How do we fix it? Art - Language Arts - Theme and Subject in Art How do the duration of different notes (quarter, half, whole, eighth, etc) relate to basic math? Identify the patterns. What is dissonance/consonance? Why is it important to know and recognize these terms (key signature, m2 apart)? Can students use accurate art vocabulary to write about and talk about famous works of art and their own art? Can students identify different types of media used in art? Art - Math/Science - Measurement with rulers and measurement of liquids. Art - Social Studies - Time and Place when art was made and what was going on in the world at that time. How wide is our musical vocabulary? Can we clearly articulate what we are trying to say, both verbally and musically? Band to Science: Discuss Intonation. What is tuning? How does all of this affect your intonation (tuning). Discuss how having your instrument in tune is all science/physics and know what to look for and how to fix it. Band to Math: In addition to tying together the language of music and the precision/duration of rhythm with basic math functions, discuss Fourth 9 Weeks Sixth Grade 14 -15 your instrument’s role within our music and how often this role occurs in band literature. Discuss the probability of these roles if reading a new piece of music (or writing a piece of music). Also, discuss Music Theory scale degrees of the diatonic scale and discuss the level of consonance and/or dissonance (relative to tonic) each scale degree holds and be able to predict the probability of which scale degree would follow given these levels of consonance and dissonance. Band to ELA: Listen to a piece of band literature and describe what you hear. Use as many musical terms as possible. Who do you think wrote this piece of music? It may be from your favorite composer? Do you have a favorite composer? If so, why what does this composer’s material sound like? Could you recognize this composer’s work by ear? So, who do you think composed this music? PE/Math: The Students will be able keep their own score while playing disc golf, at the end of the week the student should be able to determine which holes they play better using stats and probability using scores from their rounds of golf.
