J. Chem. Educ, 69, 60. BALANCING EQUATIONS FOR... The Heartburn-Wonder Experiment (v 4.1) Introduction: Write the following compounds beneath the reactions we did for these labs. We'll use this as a basis to learn how to balance chemical equations! Rules for balancing equations: 1) First of all, write all the compounds out with their correct chemical formulas. 2) Count the number of atoms on each side of the equation, keeping subscripts and parentheses into account 3) To balance the number of atoms on each side of the equation (LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MATTER!) we will add coefficients to compounds where we need more of a certain element. HINTS: 1) Save oxygen until last. Often balancing numbers of other elements will allow oxygen to already be in balance. 2) Look carefully at your math. Most chemical equations won't have high coefficients, since most chemical reactions aren't that complex! Reaction #1 sodium carbonate + calcium chloride ------> calcium carbonate + sodium chloride Reaction #2 calcium carbonate + hydrochloric acid ---> calcium chloride + water + carbon dioxide (hydrogen chloride) [Carbon (IV) oxide] Reaction #3 calcium chloride + magnesium sulfate ------> magnesium chloride + calcium sulfate Reaction #4 magnesium sulfate + sodium hydroxide ---> magnesium hydroxide + sodium sulfate Reaction #5 magnesium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid ------> magnesium chloride (hydrogen chloride) Reaction #6 sodium bicarbonate + sulfuric acid ---> (hydrogen sulfate) Reaction #7 sodium sulfate + calcium chloride ------> calcium sulfate + sodium chloride + water sodium sulfate + carbon dioxide + water
