U.S. History – Mr. Trimarco Unit 4: The Early Republic Study Guide Use the following reading, questions, and key terms to help you focus your studying for the exam. The test will consist of multiple-choice questions, a map, and several extended response questions. Required Reading -Brinkley, Chapter 6, pp. 168-178 (Washington and Adams administrations). -Brinkley, Chapter 7, pp. 180-181 (Intro to the chapter and chronology, for your reference). -Brinkley, Chapter 7, pp. 194-214, (Jefferson administration and the War of 1812). -Course Packet on the New Republic -Founding Brothers, Preface (The Generation) and Chapter 2 (The Dinner) Maps -Study the maps on page 201 and A-2, A-4, A-8 in the Brinkley. -You should be familiar with the area of the Louisiana Purchase and the route that Lewis and Clark took to get from St. Louis to the Pacific and back. -You should be able to locate the following: New York City Missouri River Washington, DC Columbia River St. Louis Snake River Louisiana Purchase New Orleans Ohio River The five Great Lakes Mississippi River Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean Questions to consider -Why were so many precedents set by the Washington administration? Provide examples. -What were the key components of Hamilton’s economic plan and why were they controversial? (Brinkley, pp. 168 – 170). -Why did political parties emerge in the early United States? How did their vision of America differ? What were the key issues on which the political parties differed? Why? -What were some of the early domestic and foreign policy challenges faced by the United States? How did the United States address these challenges? - How did the U.S. end up in a quasi war with France? - To what extent did Jefferson’s Republican views affect his policies as president? -Who were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark?
