Teaching American History Grant American Tapestry Lesson Plan Template Teacher: Ricardo Ricketts Grade: 5th Unit Topic: U.S. Expansion and the Louisiana Purchase History Essential Questions: How did the growth of the United States population lead to the expansion of the country through the Louisiana Purchase. Standards of Learning: History SOL: The student will: Develop critical thinking skills, analyze primary sources, analyze historical decisions and their future impact. Identify the roles of significant people during the westward expansion. Describe the cause and effects of the Louisiana Purchase. Reading SOL: The student will: Evaluate primary sources for relevance and intent. Read for understanding. Find cause and effect relationships in higher level text. Lesson Objectives: Content: The student will: Read the letter from Thomas Jefferson to Lewis and Clark and analyze it for the outcomes the president wanted from the expedition. Process: The student will: Research the geography of the United States early 1800s. Students will create a map that outlines the territories of the United States before the Louisiana Purchase, students will also create a map of the United States after the purchase of the Louisiana territory and analyze the growth in square miles of the country. Students will read the letter written by President Jefferson and analyze it for the main idea, what did President Jefferson want from the Journey? Why were Lewis and Clark chosen for the Expedition? Students will make a poster of the Journey Lewis and Clark made. They can attach their pre and post purchase map. Students can use call outs and attach drawing or pictures of some of the items Lewis and Clark could have come across. Materials: Tradebook: Louisiana Purchase An American by John Chase A Picture Book of Lewis and Clark, by Ronald Himler Books: Social Studies text book, Social Studies Weekly newspaper,week 22 Harcourt Social Studies textbook Handout: Blank map of North America. Lesson Procedure Background Knowledge and Purpose Setting: The teacher will: Activate the students background knowledge by leading a discussion on, "what would your family do if your family is growing and you are running out of space in your home" State the essential question, How did the growth of the United States population lead to the expansion of the country through the Louisiana Purchase. Before Reading: The teacher will: Activate prior knowledge. Read A Picture Book of Lewis and Clark. • Students will make their map showing the Untied States before the Louisiana Purchase. During Reading: The student will: • Keep a log of expedition of Lewis and Clark in Their journals. • Read the letter from President Jefferson to Lewis. Students will outline and document in their journals the desired outcomes of the expedition that President Jefferson wanted. • Students will keep a checklist of Jefferson's desired outcomes. As they read the text they will make note as to which of Jefferson's expectations where met. • Read the textbook and Social studies weekly. After Reading: The student will: • Document in their journals the findings of Lewis and Clark, obstacles, and other important historical figures that played a role in their exploration. • Work with a partner and create a comic strip that describes the cause and effects of the Louisiana Purchase. • Create a map of the United States after the Louisiana Purchase. • Make a poster display of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Closure: The student will: Fill out a concept web lead by the teacher to review what they have learned. Students will write ideas, people or concepts learned on a post it note and place it on the web. Teacher will lead a short discussion on each item as a final review. Extension/Differentiation: The student could: • Have students research the impact of some of the discoveries that the team made in the Louisiana territory. • Choose another book on the Louisiana Purchase & Lewis and Clark to find more information.
