Life Skills: Course Goals and Objectives
6th& 7th Grade
As students progress from sixth grade to seventh grade, they will have the
opportunity to explore and develop a wide range of “TECH life” skills. The curriculum
content is basically three fold: career related information, fundamentals, and hands-on
activities. The hands-on activities are presented at thirteen different work stations. The
curricula to be used are provided by Questech, Inc. and Advanced Technologies Inc.
Listed below are module summaries.
Residential Plumbing
At this workstation, students will learn about residential plumbing components and
complete plumbing hookups. They will be exposed to different types and sizes of plumbing
pipe and several different plumbing fixtures.
Residential Wiring
At this workstation, students will learn how electricity is generated and transferred to
homes, and how it travels around the home. They will have a hands-on work experience as a
residential electrician. Safety and proper work habits are stressed.
Power Mechanic/Small Engine Repair
This instruction workstation introduces the user to the fundamentals of power mechanics
and provides hand-on experience with small engines. Workstation activities expose
students to a variety of job tasks such as disassembling, inspecting, and servicing a small
gasoline engine.
Computer Construction and Service
This module provides an orientation to basic computer hardware. The student constructs a
working computer, testing each part as construction progresses. The finished product is a
fully operational computer capable of running Windows and including a CD-ROM drive and
sound system.
Weather Station/ Meteorologist
This instructional program covers the basic components of weather. It guides the user
through a series on hands-on experiments, using the weather information station as a data
collection tool.
Fixer Upper: Basic Home Maintenance
On a classroom scale, this TECHlife module gives students a taste of house repair projects
along with a builder’s perspective of the structure, systems, and materials that comprise a
house.
Wash Away: Laundering
In this TECHlife module, students learn effective ways to care for, launder, and repair
clothing – with and without the aid of an automatic washer and dryer.
Residential Modeling: Design floor plans
In this TECHlife module, students learn how to design floor plan and build a 3-D model by
measuring their classroom.
Manners Matter: Etiquette
In this TECHlife module, students have the opportunity to practice the customs of
etiquette in dining – a skill they may long remember in future social or business situations,
where manners really do matter.
Sew E–Z: Sewing
In this module, students learn the basics of machine sewing and apply their creativity to
produce a drawstring bag.
Dollars and Sense: Personal Money Management
In this module, students learn how to handle credit wisely, discuss merits of different
savings plans, investigate clubs and organizations involved with money management, and
consider various career options in money-related fields.
Snack Attack: Making Snacks
This module gets students started on the road to enjoyable yet healthful snacking. They
will develop an awareness of the detrimental effects of sweet and fatty snacks on the
body and teeth. They will use a microwave oven and prepare a simple snack using correct
measuring techniques.
Wake-Up Call: Cooking Breakfast
This TECHlife module will instruct the students on the why, how, and wherefore of
preparing and eating a healthful breakfast. They will analyze a breakfast diet and plan a
breakfast menu.
How Sweet It Is: Making Desserts
Baking is an art. “Gelling” gelatin, dissolving sugar to make fudge, decorating cupcakes,
baking pies are just some of the pleasure-filled activities students will experience in this
module.
Assessment:
Students will be evaluated as they progress through the lessons presented in a given
module. Students will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of the
fundamentals associated with the respective skill. Students may be required to accomplish
written exercises, quizzes, and/or tests. In modules requiring a “finished product”, that
final product may also serve as an assessment tool. A strong work ethic, a positive
attitude, and ability to work cooperatively augment a student’s success in this course.
