Notes- Part 2
Systems of Equations Word Problems (Standard 9.0)
When setting up linear equations use the chart below as guidance.
Example 2: Christine O'Donovan Middle Academy is selling football tickets for a home game. The school sold 35 tickets for $86 on the first day of the sale.
Student tickets cost $2 each and non-student tickets cost $3 each. Find the number of student tickets and the number of non-student tickets the gym sold.
Setting up the equations:
Solution:
Example 3: A library is having a book sale to raise money. Hardcover books cost $4 each and paperback books cost $2 each. Ms. Rivas spends $26 for 8 books.
How many hardcover books did she purchase?
Correct Solution:
Example 4: The school that David goes to is selling tickets to a choral performance. On the first day of ticket sales the school sold 3 senior citizen tickets and 1
child ticket for a total of $38. The school took in $52 on the second day by selling 3 senior citizen tickets and 2 child tickets. Find the price of a senior citizen
ticket and the price of a child ticket.
Solution:
Example 5: The Los Angles Zoo is a popular field trip destination. This year the senior class at High School A and the senior class at High School B both
planned trips there. The senior class at High School A rented and filled 8 vans and 8 buses with 240 students. High School B rented and filled 4 vans and 1 bus
with 54 students. Every van had the same number of students in it as did the buses. Find the number of students in each van and in each bus.
