Lesson Plan 7
Under the Ocean theme
School
Age Group
Purpose
Date




Explain principle of session – fun / non competitive / stickers and
reward scheme
Reinforce basic concepts such as warm / cool down
Introduce children to a variety of different sports and movements; it
may be helpful to take pictures to help explain
Explain purpose of whistle – one blast and they should sit down as fast
as possible and be silent!
Preparation
Whistle
8 Hoops
Water and cups / encourage use of individual water bottles.
Warm Up
Introduce yourself as “The Waves”

Get the children to walk around the area, pretending to be an octopus
by waving your arms around, like they were the legs of an octopus.
(Pulse raiser)

Next get them to be “dolphins” and get them to swim and leap around
the gym. Every so often get the dolphins to jump really high out of the
water, as this is them doing tricks. (all-around workout, jumping
strengthens the heart, muscles, and bones and improves agility and
coordination)

They are now crabs, so they have to walk backwards on their hands
and feet, make sure they give themselves space so the don’t bang into
each other strengthening – shoulders, quadriceps and stomach
muscles)

Bring them back together by getting them to repeat the first movement
of octopus.
Activity 1
Islands
 Place a number of hoops out on the floor, these represent “islands”
 Get all the children to pretend to swim around, when you blow the
whistle they must get to a hoop and stand inside it. (THERE SHOULD
BE A MAXIMUM OF 3 PER HOOP for safety) make it very clear that there
has to be no pushing.
 If you do not get into a ring your out.
 Each time the ocean will cover up some of the islands, making it harder
for the swimmers. (remove hoops, sometimes one and then as the
rounds continue, take away a few at a time)
 The game continues until there is one person left.
Activity 2
Fishy Fishy Cross My Ocean
 Select two pupils to be “sharks” get them to stand at one end of the
area
 Everyone else are “fish” they should be at the other end of the gym.
 When the two “sharks” call out “fishy fishy cross my ocean” all the fish
have to run to the other end.
 If a fish is tagged, they must stand still on the spot and become
“seaweed” the seaweed can catch other fish, but they can only do this
from where they are standing, as they are fixed to the ocean floor.
 The game ends when everyone has been turned into seaweed.
Activity 3
Finding Nemo




Mark a rectangular area at end of hall
Children line up face down facing the area on a set line
Leader is Bruce the shark and the children are all Nemo
On Shark Attack command, children must stand up and run to safety
area of reef; Bruce must try to tag Nemo
 If Nemo is caught Nemo becomes a shark and joins Bruce
 Games continues until are Nemo’s are caught or time is up
 Nemo’s move further away after few attempts
Activity 4
Fish Food
 Divide children into 3 teams for relays
 Place obstacle such as hurdles to step over or hoops to go through
along the way
 Children must pick up appropriate colour of fish food (beanbags) for
their team.
 First team with all food collected is the winner.
 Vary the types of obstacles
 Children could act out different types of sea creatures, like those in
warm up activity
Warm Down
Bring group together and sit them down on floor / use
recovery time to reinforce some of key points;
Get them to tell you why it is good to be able to swim
like a fish…
Why is it important to exercise – strengthen heart,
skeleton, muscles etc.
Name a couple of the major muscles used – e.g.
quadriceps, hamstrings.
Simple cool down stretch whilst sitting;
Shoulder shrugs
Straight arm across chest
Link fingers and straighten arms away from body;
Slowly encourage group to stand;
Heel digs;
Slow march on spot.
*Note:
