(10^2 means 10 squared.) Ahoy GREEN CLASS: This is the first time we have run this "expanded notation" game in the domain of whole numbers 0 to 300. Guessing Hurkle's hiding place in three turns is awesome, a combination of good play and good luck! GREEN CLASS and BLUE CLASS: Please keep Hurkle's hiding place secret. The Hurkle Hiders [Bob & George] 2008-10-05. We haven't received more guesses, so we suspect that the Red and White classes found out where Hurkle was hiding from the Green and Blue classes. So, tra la, tra la, we sent information about Hurkle's hiding place, the special number 231. Ahoy Red, White, Blue, and Green Classes, The Green Class and the Blue Class found Hurkle hiding at the number 231. Well done! The number 231 is a triangular number. The first 4 triangular numbers are 1, 3, 6, and 10. What are the next 3 triangular numbers after 10? At a bowling alley, the 10 pins are set up in a triangle with 4 pins in the back row, then a row with 3 pins, then a row with 2 pins, and 1 pin in the front row. 1 pin + 2 pins + 3 pins + 4 pins = 10 pins How can you arrange 231 pins in a triangle like the bowling pins (larger, of course)? Try it with base 10 cubes, counting chips, or pennies. 231 is the sum of natural numbers from 1 to (secret number). 231 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + ... + secret number. What is the secret number? This was a very fun and interesting game. Thanks, Janet Dielman and the RED, WHITE, BLUE, and GREEN classes. The Hurkle Hiders [Bob & George] Play together, learn together!
