HurkleQuest on the Number Line Game 37
Played by Janet Dielman and the Red, White, Blue, and Green Classes
The Hurkle Hiders [Bob & George] ● [email protected]
This is the story of HurkleQuest on the Number Line Game 37 played by four sixth-grade classes
and their teacher Janet Dielman at Dr. R.H. Brown Middle School in Madison, Connecticut.
 On 2008-09-10, we sent an invitation to play: 
The Hurkle Hiders invite you to play HurkleQuest on the Number Line Game 37.
Hurkle's hiding place is a whole number 0 to 300.
Begin by sending three guesses to [email protected].
.
Guesses must be in an expanded form that shows the number of hundreds, tens, and ones. If your
first three guesses are 9, 64, and 265, send them like this:
Guess #1: 9 ones
Guess #2: 6 tens, 4 ones
Guess #3: 2 hundreds, 6 tens, 5 ones
If you prefer a different type of expanded form, it is A-OK to send your guesses in that form.
The Hurkle Hiders will send a clue for each guess. Here are the possible clues:
RED: very hot, very close to Hurkle's hiding place
ORANGE: hot, close to Hurkle's hiding place, but not as close as RED
YELLOW: warm, not as close as RED or ORANGE, but closer than GREEN
GREEN: cool, not as close as YELLOW, but closer than BLUE
BLUE: cold, far from Hurkle's hiding place, but closer than VIOLET
VIOLET: very cold, very far from Hurkle's hiding place
Graph your guesses and colors on a big number line. We use three types of number lines:
1. Three meter sticks end to end. Every centimeter mark is a possible Hurkle's hiding place.
2. Two 150-centimeter measuring tapes end to end. Every centimeter mark is a possible hiding place.
3. Adding-machine tape, 7.62-centimeter (3-inch) wide paper tape. You can make many number lines
from one roll of tape. We buy 'em at Staples: Item number 531194. $1.09 each.
Hurkle is hiding, wanting to be found!

As you will see, most of Coach Dielman's students began with the notation we
suggested, but soon everyone jumped out of the box, and went up, up, and away!

Good work, BLUE CLASS. Hurkle loves your guess #11: 2.29 x 10^2. (10^2 means 10 squared.)
Ahoy GREEN CLASS: This is the first time we have run this "expanded notation" game in the domain of
whole numbers 0 to 300. Guessing Hurkle's hiding place in three turns is awesome, a combination of
good play and good luck!
GREEN CLASS and BLUE CLASS: Please keep Hurkle's hiding place secret.
The Hurkle Hiders [Bob & George]
2008-10-05. We haven't received more guesses, so we suspect that the Red and White classes found
out where Hurkle was hiding from the Green and Blue classes. So, tra la, tra la, we sent information about
Hurkle's hiding place, the special number 231.
Ahoy Red, White, Blue, and Green Classes,
The Green Class and the Blue Class found Hurkle hiding at the number 231. Well done!
The number 231 is a triangular number. The first 4 triangular numbers are 1, 3, 6, and 10. What are the
next 3 triangular numbers after 10?
At a bowling alley, the 10 pins are set up in a triangle with 4 pins in the back row, then a row with 3 pins,
then a row with 2 pins, and 1 pin in the front row.
1 pin + 2 pins + 3 pins + 4 pins = 10 pins
How can you arrange 231 pins in a triangle like the bowling pins (larger, of course)? Try it with base 10
cubes, counting chips, or pennies.
231 is the sum of natural numbers from 1 to (secret number).
231 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + ... + secret number.
What is the secret number?
This was a very fun and interesting game. Thanks, Janet Dielman and the RED, WHITE, BLUE, and
GREEN classes.
