COMMUNICATION GUIDELINES
This student resource provides evaluation guidelines for several elements of communication, including
listening, body language, and aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive, and assertive behavior. Review
communication skills as discussed in the 100% Student Success textbook and use this resource to
apply the concepts during class activities. Make additional copies as needed to use in class, as a study
guide, or to assess communication in a study group. These resources are intended to be used for
discussion and activities related to several communication elements.

Listener was open to ideas and perspectives.
The listener did not prejudge the speaker.
Discussion Questions
 What indicates ineffective listening during communication? (Consider body language, facial
expressions, etc.)
 What demonstrates effective listening?
Body Language
Classroom Activity: Demonstration
Review the dialogs that were used to demonstrate listening skills. Evaluate the body language that was
observed in each. Or, develop new scenarios for this activity. A variation on this activity is to
demonstrate body language prior to and after the discussion and compare and contrast differences
between the two.

Diversity Considerations
The following critical thinking question is included in the 100% Student Success textbook. Use this as a
reference in a class discussion or as a discussion question in a study group.
Consider the following scenario and answer the questions that follow.
You are the group leader for a project at your place of employment. One of your team members
contributes effectively during group meetings, but does not look group members in the eye when
speaking. You begin to hear comments and remarks—not all of them kind—about this individual and
her lack of eye contact. You suspect that it may be due to cultural influence.
 How do you approach the group?
 How do you address the issue with the individual?
