Documentation for this disk. There are 8 files for the original Barro data set. The ninth file listed (BARRO9.DAT) matches certain variables from the World Development Report data set with the Barro data set. There are 118 cross-sectional observations on each file. Names of variables on the files follow the file names below. Variable descriptions and countries included in the samples follow that. Missing values on each of these files have been set to -1.0E-15, values consistent with HUMMER. If one wishes to be completely consistent with Barro's empirical work, then when the 98 country sample is used, each variable should be interacted with the BIGSAMP dummy. Likewise, if the 76 country sample is desired, interactions with the SMLSAMP variable should be made. As a check, means and variances of the interacted variables should be computed and compared to the appendix results in Barro's empirical paper. Note, however, that the ASSASS variable is not correct. The assassinations variable listed below and on the file is that identified by Barro as being the assassinations variable. However, what we see is not what he claims it to be. Further, no other variable on his original file has a mean/variance matching that listed in his paper. The variable names and descriptions should match up to those used in Barro's empirical piece fairly well.
