what the acronym stands
for as you explain what the
disease is…)
What causes it?
Depression
Depression is a mood disorder that causes you to
feel sad or hopeless for a long period of time. It is
much more than just having “the blues” for an
afternoon or having a day that just isn’t your day.
Depression can have serious effects on your
enjoyment of life, your schoolwork, your health,
and the people you care about.
Depression may be triggered by stress, other
illnesses, certain drugs or medications, or
inherited traits – those parts of our personality that
we have at birth.
HIV/AIDS
STD
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that
attacks the immune system by destroying infectionfighting T cells, which are your body’s third line of
defense. HIV causes Acquired immunodeficiency
syndrome (AIDS). AIDS is an often fatal condition
your body is in after HIV has prevented your body
from fighting infections. AIDS is the final and most
severe stage of the HIV infection.
Virus, HIV is spread from a HIV-infected-individual
to another person by the exchange of bodily fluids,
such as blood, breast milk, semen, or vaginal
secretions, through the mucous membranes of broken
skin, through shared needles (for tattooing, earpiercing, drug-injecting). A HIV infected mother can
also pass the infection on to her child.
Early symptoms of HIV can be much like the flu.
Fever, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, and joint
pain are common. A skin rash may develop, along
with abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
A Sexually Transmitted Disease is an infection
or disease passed from person to person through
sexual contact.

Dr evaluations, tests
Blood test
Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis can be cured
with antibiotics, a medicine such as penicillin.
(Chlamydia and gonorrhea involve painful
urination and vaginal/penile discharge. Syphilis
involves a sore on genitals that can lead to
additional symptoms later on, such as fever and a
rash.) genital herpes - a series of small red
bumps, blisters, or open sores on the penis,
vagina, or nearby area - and HIV – human
immunodeficiency virus, a weakening of the
immune system
Through blood test by a Dr. or urine test
Those at risk for depression could be individuals
who have experienced a stressful event, such as
parents’ divorce, the death of a relative, friend, or
pet, a break-up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, or
failure at school. Men and woman of all ages

will not protect you from STDs.
