The Chemistry of Everyday Life
(Formerly offered as CHM 1022C, CHM 1020)
CHM 1020C The Chemistry of Everyday Life (3) (A.A.) Four hours lecture/lab per week. This course
meets Area V requirements for A.A./A.S. general education requirements. This course assumes no prior
knowledge of chemistry and is designed primarily for persons in the liberal arts who are interested in
obtaining a deeper understanding of the science of everyday life. This course explores the chemistry
seen in the everyday world around us. Additional special fees are required.

Describe scientific and technological advances and their relationships to chemistry.
Identify both physical and chemical properties and changes.
Investigate matter and subdivide it simpler units.
Apply the SI system of measurement as it applies to problem solving.
Discuss the basic atomic theory and its relationship to atomic structure.
Explain the basic principle of bonding in molecules and ionic compounds.
Investigate chemical reactivity found in everyday life.
Discuss energy as it relates to chemical reactions.
Describe acids and bases in terms of their physical and chemical properties.
Define oxidation-reduction reactions.
Define and understand the concept of functional groups in organic chemistry.
Describe basic biochemical macromolecules.
Demonstrate an understanding of the chemical nature of selected medicinal and chemical
agents.
Describe and differentiate between the various organic functional groups.
Describe basic consumer chemistry in everyday life.
Perform laboratory activities designed to give hand-on learning experience and supplement the
lecture content.
Demonstrate an understanding of the scientific method and be able to apply it to everyday life.
