GRANGEHURST - SUPER FUTURES
April 2009
When I started Grangehurst Winery (GHW) in 1992, I offered 100 debentures to investors who received an allocation of GHW wines
over a 5 year period. Subsequently, 3 futures options were offered – and fully subscribed – whereby investors paid upfront for future
supplies of wine. The wines supplied to debentureholders and futuresholders included GHW Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet
Sauvignon Merlot blend, Pinotage and Nikela.
Many of the debentureholders and futuresholders have told me that purchasing their debentures and/or futures has been “one of the
best investments they’ve ever made”. These offers have certainly been win-win situations for both parties, and an added advantage has
been the friendships that Mandy and I have made with many of Grangehurst’s investors/customers.
I’m often asked when we are going to offer more futures, and this has led to the “Super Futures Offer”.
What is the Super Futures Offer?
Similar to the previous futures offers viz. an investment now for future supplies of wine. However, the difference is that the wine that
Super Futuresholders (SFH’s) receive will be a limited bottling of a specially selected wine of super-premium quality – not the
same, but certainly on a par with the exclusive CWG wines that Grangehurst produces for the annual Cape Winemakers Guild auction.
(Grangehurst 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve obtained an average price of R607 per 750ml incl. VAT at the CWG 2007 Auction).
The Wines, Quantities & Period
The SFH’s wine will be a blend of 3 of the classic Bordeaux grape varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. A total of
15 barrels of this wine will be produced and bottled each year starting with the 2005 vintage. The 2005 vintage has been bottled and will
be labelled and released in May or June 2009. The 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages are currently in barrels.
The maximum production of this wine – and subsequent vintages – will be 375 cases of which 225 cases will be for SFH’s and 15
cases for Grangehurst’s vinoteque. The remaining 135 cases will be available for other customers.
As a SFH, you may pre-select your preferred packaging viz. 750ml bottles and/or 1,5 litre magnums according to the following
options:
12 x 750ml bottles (no 1,5 lt magnums) per year
6 x 750ml bottles & 3 x 1,5 lt magnums per year
6 x 1,5 lt magnums (no 750ml bottles) per year
Please Note:
Maximum of 2 Super Futures per person.
The period of the Super Futures agreement will be 4 years, commencing with the Grangehurst 2005 “Private Collection” Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot blend.
The Quality of the Private Collection Vintages (2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008)
These “Private Collection” vintages will be Grangehurst’s flagship wine. Since our maiden vintage in 1992, wines produced at
Grangehurst have received the trophy for the SA Champion Wine, the first 5-star rating for a red wine by Wine Magazine, one of the
few CWG wines to be rated 5-stars by Wine magazine, the only Pinotage (Hidden Valley) to be rated 5-stars by Wine Magazine as well
as a Platter 5-star award for our Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot blend; and the Nikela has received a 92-point Parker rating (USA).
Grangehurst wines have a good track record – wines of pedigree that are amongst the best examples of South African wines that can
improve and last for 10 years or more. My goal with the Super Futures “Private Collection” vintages is to provide you with top quality
wines that will be a great investment – wines that will stand tall when compared with the great wines of South Africa and the world.
What’s the Investment? R6,240
The ex-cellar price of the “Private Collection” wines will not be less than R220 per 750ml bottle (excl. VAT) when released in 2008. The
value of the 48 x 750ml bottles (or magnum equivalents) that you will receive over the 4-year period equates to R10,560 (excl. VAT and
excl. inflation). The investment of R6,240 is equivalent to R130 per 750ml excl. VAT – a substantial discount on the ex-cellar price of
the wine. When you receive each batch of wine, you will only need to pay VAT and Excise Duty (currently R246 for 12 x 750ml) and
delivery (if applicable).
I am sure you will get great pleasure from this investment in fine wine. I look forward to welcoming you as one of Grangehurst’s 225
Super Futuresholders – and providing you with 4 vintages of super premium wines.
