What is Expository Writing?
Expository Writing Notes
Expository writing is writing that analyzes or explains a topic. It is meant to
inform the reader by using facts and statistical information.
Expository writing is factual and is usually written in third person. It uses
specific details and examples to support the validity of the author’s
viewpoint.
Expository writing is one of the most formulaic kinds of writing, that is,
certain traditional standards are used to write and assess it:




The main idea is clearly stated or implied
The main idea is developed and supported buy essential facts.
The facts are presented in a clear, orderly way.
The presentation is directed toward a specific audience.

Tips for writing an expository How-to Paper:
1. Choose one thing to teach someone
2. Focus on a plan
a. Think of all the materials someone will need
b. Think of all the steps someone will follow
3. Use sequence words in your directions.
Determining your audience is always important when you write. Your
audience should always influence what you write and how your write. Does
my audience need a little or a lot of detail? Do I need to define terms to my
audience? What is the age of my audience? Will I use simple vocabulary?
YOUR AUDIENCE TODAY IS FORMAL, THEY NEED SPECIFIC
DETAILS, AND ARE ADULTS.
Focusing on action verbs, you are going to write a “How-to” paragraph.
