Integrated Community Musculoskeletal and Pain Service
The Service
A combined Orthopaedic, Rheumatology and Chronic pain service using a
see treat and discharge model. This highly responsive service is run by
Specialist Physiotherapists





Enhanced MSK assessment
Injection clinics
Access to diagnostics MRI, X-ray, Phlebotomy, ultrasound scans and
guided injections including hydro-dilatation for frozen shoulder
Screening of Orthopaedic and Rheumatology MSK patients for
secondary care suitability and onward referral
Advice provided to reduce need for physiotherapy
Aims
 To ensure patients with musculoskeletal conditions are seen by the
right clinician at the right time to facilitate a timely recovery.
 To reduce the number of secondary care referrals by a minimum of
40%
Who can be referred?
Patients who are 18 and over and registered with a Barnet GP
A guide to common conditions you can refer:
Spine
Mechanical spine pain +/- sciatica or arm pain
Knee
Anterior knee pain, bursitis, meniscal/knee joint pain, ligament and muscle
sprains and strains, osteoarthritis
Shoulder
Signs of rotator cuff tendinopathy/impingement, frozen shoulder, ACJ
Wrist/hand/elbow
Tennis/golfer’s elbow, De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis, ganglions, trigger finger,
hand tendinopathies, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome.
Foot/ankle
Achillies tenderness, ankle pain, hallux valgus (bunions), heel pain, flat feet,
ganglions, ligament injury/sprain, morton’s neuroma, plantar fasciitis.
Hip
Osteoarthritis, trochanteric bursitis, groin pain/strains
Please do not refer:
Paediatrics <18 years. Urgent Red Flag pathology such as cauda equina and
suspected malignancy, recent fractures, any conditions requiring emergency
care.

How?
The service is accessed through the Referral Management System (RMS).
Referrals are triaged by specialist clinicians and directed to the most
appropriate service.
