Nappy Change Procedure
Policy Number – 12.2
Link to National Regulations and National Quality Framework
o National Regulations 112: Nappy Change Facilities
o Quality Area 2: Children’s health and safety: Standard 2.1: Element 2.1.3: Effective
hygiene practices are promoted and implemented
o Staying Healthy: Preventing infectious diseases in early childhood education and care
services – 5th Edition 2012.
Rationale
Maintaining high standards of hygiene is essential in preventing the spread of infectious
disease and ensuring good health. Effective hygiene practices assist significantly in reducing
the likelihood of children becoming ill due to cross-infection or as a result of exposure to
materials, surfaces, body fluids or other substances that may cause infection or illness.
Aim

To provide guidelines for staff members and parents to reduce the transmission of
infection. Hygienic nappy changing and toileting is important to prevent these
germs from spreading disease
Implementation
It is important to ensure that nappy change facilities prevent unsupervised access by
children as well as ensuring that adequate and appropriate hygienic facilities are provided
for nappy changing.
Ensure that the nappy change mat or surface is not torn and can be easily cleaned. Do not
share the same nappy change mat with children from another room, if possible. Having
separate change mats for each room can help limit the spread of infection and contain it to
a single room.
Check that all the supplies you need are ready. If the child can walk, walk with them to the
changing area. If the child cannot walk, pick them up and carry them to the changing area.

Within both children’s bathrooms there are two nappy change tables used for
changing children’s nappies and children that have wet themselves.
Each nappy change table will have a separate change mat, after the completion of a
nappy change the mat will be wiped down with detergent and wiped over with a dry
paper towel before the next child.
Each child who is in a nappy will have a designated nappy locker (located under the
change table) which will be filled by the parent each morning.
Gloves (powder free) are required to be worn for each nappy change and are kept
in a dispenser box next to the change table.
Wipes will also be provided, and placed in reach when changing a nappy.
Parents are to provide their child’s nappy cream if required.
