The Media: StarSpecial, PARENTING Insertion date: 22 January 2009 WATCHING BABY’S BACK Stop nappy rash in its tracks and keep your little one happy and smiling with an easy to follow precaution routine. Even with today’s absorbent diapers, nappy rash is still a persistent problem for babies. A recent survey accounts for 20-25% of paediatric dermatology consultations. Nappy rash is easy to diagnose. The first sign is a slight redness of the skin spotted under or around the nappy line. If not treated immediately, the redness may spread to a larger area. In more severe cases, it can develop into blisters or ulcers. Sometimes, fever may also occur if a bacteria infection sets in. Causes of diaper rash are prolonged exposure to wetness and contact with trapped irritants from human waste products like bacteria in faeces and ammonia from stale urine. Other trigger factors are allergic reaction to the detergent or softener which remained in the terrier nappies and soap or lotion, use of plastic pants or abrasion-rough nappy material, sensitive to new food when weaning or consumption of acidic food, sensitive to prescribed medication, illness like cold, allergy to the inner lining of the diaper and sensitive skin. Even with the best care, babies with sensitive skin are found to be more susceptible to nappy rash. In most cases, these babies suffer from or have a family history of psoriasis, eczema or seborrhoeic dermatitis. Changing the diaper once it is wet or soiled, using quality absorbent diapers, avoiding plastic pants, using detergent specially formulated to wash babies terrier napkins and rinsing with water thoroughly can help alleviate the problem of nappy rash. Avoid also using baby wipes containing spirit or alcohol and fragrant toiletries. If the rash is not treated immediately, it can develop into fungal or bacteria infection of the skin, appearing as very sore red skin sometimes accompanied by pus-filled blisters. In most cases when this happens, fever will be prominent and the baby will be unwell and highly irritable. 1 The Media: StarSpecial, PARENTING Insertion date: 22 January 2009 Ideally this simple routine should be practiced before nappy rash develops. However, it can still be used to prevent mild nappy rash from getting serious. Change nappies as soon as possible after they become wet and soiled; Each time you change your baby, clean the nappy area thoroughly with cotton wool and water and pat dry or, when possible air dry the diaper area completely. Remember to clean baby girls from front to back to avoid getting bacteria into the urethra; Apply Pureen Nappy Rash Cream containing zinc oxide and antiseptic to your baby’s bottom; and Leave cream to dry for one to two minutes before putting on a new diaper. Pureen Nappy Rash Cream contains 0.02% of benzalkonium chloride and 0.2% of cetrimide which help to eliminate the harmful bacteria and prevent secondary infection. It also contains 10% zinc oxide which is a mild astringent. This has a soothing and protective function. Pureen Nappy Rash Cream can help in the treatment of nappy rash, nappy redness, heat rash and dribble rash. It can also help relieve symptoms of atopic or infantile eczema. Just apply evenly after every nappy change on dry and clean skin. * This article is brought to you by Summit Company (M) Sdn Bhd. 2
