Reading/Language Arts - Pop’s Bridge vocabulary:
 crew – a group of people who work together
 tide – the regular rising and falling of the surface level
of the oceans, caused by the pull of the moon and the sun
 cling – to stick or hold tight to
 balancing – putting in a steady or stable condition
 foggy – covered by fog
 disappears – to pass out of sight, vanish
 stretch – to extend
 excitement – the state of being excited
Grammar vocabulary:
 noun – a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea
Spelling: Words with long o sound:
load, open, told, yellow, soak, shadow, foam, follow, glow, sold, window,
coach, almost, throat, cold, most, challenge: tomorrow, sailboats
Math Vocabulary:
 addend - a number that is added in an addition problem
 sum – the answer in an addition problem
 Commutative property: 2 + 3 = 5, therefore 3 + 2 = 5
The order of the addends does not change the sum.
 Identity (Zero) Property – The sum of any number and zero is the number.
3 + 0 = 3 0 + 3 = 3 1,000 + 0 = 1,000 0 + 1,000 = 1,000
 Associative Property – The way the addends are grouped does not change
the sum. (3 + 2) + 4 = 3 + (2 + 4)
5+4 = 3+6

 estimate – a number that is close to the exact number; you can estimate
by rounding; key word = ”about”
 rounding – to make a number easier to work with by changing it into a
number that ends in zero
 regroup – to rename a number using place value (for example, ten ones
equals one ten.)
 compatible numbers – numbers that are easy to add or subtract
Skills vocabulary:
 base word - a word to which endings, prefixes, and suffixes can be added
 word family – a group of words with a common pattern (such as having the same
base word)
 prefix – a word part at the beginning of a word that changes the meaning of the
word (re-, un-, dis-)
 suffix - a word part at the end of a word that changes the meaning of the word (less, -ful)
 subject noun – the noun that is the subject of a sentence
(to find the subject, ask who? or what? the sentence is about)
 common noun – a noun that names any person, place, or thing – not capitalized
unless at the beginning of a sentence
 proper noun - a noun that names a specific person, place, or thing, and is always
capitalized
