Determinants and consequences of economic growth
1. What factors can determine the economic growth?
From the Eurostat webpage download the data concerning factors of growth of the EU28
countries, referring to:
o Human capital (education, labour force)
o Technology (e.g. ICT)
o R&D
a) Prepare figures (e.g. bar chart showing R&D as % of GDP in various EU28 countries
in the latest year). Comment on the differences in the aforementioned factors of
growth across EU countries.
b) You can also use inbuilt Eurostat tool for making graphs/figures
c) Make a scatter plot that shows the relationships between the analyzed factors and the
income per capita – comment
d) Make a scatter plot that shows the relationships between the above factors and the
growth rate of income per capita over the analyzed period of time – comment
2. Trends in development in a comparative setting
 Go to GAPminder (http://www.gapminder.org/ )
 Using Gapminder World charts analyse the relationship between:
o Income per capita and HDI
o Income per capita and life expectancy
o Income per capita and child mortality
o Income per capita and literacy rate
o Income per capita and internet users
o Income per capita and … [anything else you are interested in]
 Analyze both recent data, as well as historical trends (Play option). Draw particular
attention to the European countries versus other parts of the world.
 Select one European country and analyze its path of development (take into account
income per capita and alternative other indicators) in time in comparison with a
selected country in other part of the world
3. Institutions and economic growth
a) From the Transparency International webpage
http://www.transparency.org/research/cpi/overview
Download data concerning corruption perception index (in the most recent year
possible) for the EU countries.
 Make a scatter plot that shows the relationship between corruption and the and
GDP per capita – comment
b) From the Word Bank webpage download data concerning World Governance
Indicators for the EU countries:
- Government Effectiveness,
- Political Stability and Absence of Violence/Terrorism,
- Rule of Law.

 Make a graph illustrating the relationship between a chosen measure of
governance and GDP per capita
4. The size of government and economic growth
Make a scatter plot that shows the relationship between the size of the governments for the
EU countries (measured as total general government expenditure as % of GDP – download
the data from the Eurostat ) and the growth rate of the GDP per capita. Do countries with
bigger governments systematically grow faster or slower than the others?
5. Potential consequences of the economic growth
Think about potential consequences of the economic growth considering such aspects as:
 living standard
 health
 happiness
 environement protection
Find and download the needed data from the Eurostat and World bank webpage for the EU28
countries.
