Real World Similar Triangles
1. Campsites Potomac (P) and Glenville (G) are on opposite sides of the lake. A survey crew
made the measurements shown on the diagram below. What is the distance between the two
campsites?
2. What is the height of the tree below to the nearest foot?
3. Ruthie wanted to measure the height of the school’s flagpole. She placed a mirror on the
ground 48 feet from the flagpole. She then walked backwards until she could see the top of the
flagpole in the mirror. Her eyes were 5 feet above the ground and she was 12 feet from the
mirror. Using similar triangles, draw a diagram, and find the height of the flagpole to the nearest
tenth of a foot.
4. A man 6 feet tall casts a 4 foot shadow. At the same time a tree casts a 12 foot shadow. How
tall is the tree?
