APPOINTMENT OF SUBJECT LEADER FOR ARTS (DRAMA & THEATRE)

Job Summary – General Information
Founded in 2007, The Havelock Academy is an 11-18 school which serves the local area of the East Marsh,
Heneage and Old Clee communities in Great Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire. It is sponsored by the David Ross
Foundation, and represents an initiative to “Broaden Horizons” for its students. The Academy sets out to
collaborate with a range of parties, including the Local Authority, in providing an independent-style, pastorally
based, innovative curriculum for its students. There are approximately 900 students on roll, and around 150 staff.
Academy years are organised as Forms, with students aged 11 entering Form 1 (Year 7).
The curriculum has undergone radical changes over the last few years, with the International Baccalaureate Middle
Years Programme forming the focus for provision in Forms 1-5 (currently delivered in Forms 1-3, with plans to
move into Forms 4 and 5 over the next two years). A Levels are currently offered in the 6th Form, with plans for an
IB Diploma programme in the future. The Academy is at present a Candidate School for the International
Baccalaureate.
The pastoral structure at the Academy is central to daily life for all staff and students. All students and staff belong
to one of eight houses, run by a Head of House. An extensive co-curricular programme is offered during the week,
as well as during holidays. All staff are expected to contribute to this programme.
Specific Information
The Drama department at Havelock is part of the Arts Faculty team, along with Music, Dance and Visual Art. The
mission of the Faculty is to deliver high quality provision in and out of the classroom in all of the arts – holistically
as well as through the individual disciplines.
The aims of the Drama department (within the Arts Faculty) at Havelock are:
• To stimulate an interest in theatre both within curricular and co-curricular Drama
• To promote good theatre practice in all its forms
• To promote a place where all are welcome to take part in theatrical activities
• To provide a diverse programme of all forms of theatre throughout the year of interest and value to both the
Academy and the local community
• To provide first class teaching of Drama throughout the Academy both within the curriculum and through cocurricular activities
• To produce quality Academy productions, in different styles and genres to a high production standard
• To help equip students with the ability to express their ideas with passion, articulacy and confidence.
The subject’s particular suitability for discussing moral, social and philosophical concerns is celebrated and
explored by teachers at all levels.
The Arts Faculty currently delivers the AQA specification in Performing Arts at GCSE and the EDEXCEL
specification in Drama and Theatre Studies at AS/A level. The IB Theatre Arts Course is due to be introduced in
September 2011. This year we have a number of students going on to study Theatre at university.
The Faculty is currently housed in the main school building, with 2 studios, 1 multi-purpose classroom, 1 music
room and 3 art rooms. Extensive use is also made of the main Academy hall and stage. A new purpose built
building is planned for 2011 which will include a central theatre as well as other specialist areas and facilities.
At present there are a number of members of staff within the Faculty who deliver part of the Drama curriculum.
This is an exceptional opportunity to join an ambitious, creative and enthusiastic Faculty and to take an active,
visible role within it. We would welcome applications from established Drama teachers as well as those eager to
develop their teaching skills. We would also welcome applications from theatre professionals.
Personal Specification
The person appointed will have a good degree, experience of working with children or young people, and, in most
cases, a post-graduate teaching qualification. A proven ability to work as a member of a team and to contribute to
the wider life of the Academy is also desirable.
Subject Leader of Drama’s responsibilities
The Subject Leader of Drama is responsible for teaching and learning of Drama and theatre studies and the
leadership and management of its academic curriculum. The successful candidate will work closely with the
Faculty Head of Arts, and take on a range of management responsibilities.
The successful candidate would be expected to contribute fully to the life of the Arts Faculty. Rehearsals for
practical work and for co-curricular productions take place after school and sometimes in the holidays. The Faculty
experiences periods of intense activity in the weeks leading up to a production. There is typically one major
Academy production each year as well as additional public performances and concerts. Longer term, it is
envisaged that each house will work towards producing a house performance or play each year. The responsibility
for producing the main Academy productions lies within the Arts Faculty. The standard of co-curricular Drama at
Havelock is strong and the programming is ambitious. The Department also organises a wide range of theatre
visits throughout the year including trips to London as well as visits closer to home.
Over the last two years a number of public performances have been produced by the Arts Faculty including the
musicals The Sound of Music and We Will Rock You, and the plays The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the
Goldfish and Black Comedy. The student-led theatre company within the Academy, Grims Theatre, spent a week
performing at the Edinburgh Festival in August 2009. Theatre groups including Hull Truck, Blah Blah Blah and
Stomp have all worked in the department, undertaking a range of activities with students and staff. The Academy
holds the Arts Mark award and is very proud of the strong Arts tradition that has been developed over the last few
years.
As a member of the School’s teaching staff the post-holder will have a responsibility in every circumstance to
promote and safeguard the welfare of pupils in the Academy. The Academy’s procedures and policies for child
protection and security are published in the Staff Handbook (and on the Academy website), of which all teachers
are given a copy, and training in these procedures and policies forms part of new teacher induction, as well as ongoing staff development.
Salary
Havelock operates its own pay scale and teachers are entitled to be members of the Teachers’ Pension scheme.
The salary for this position is on the Havelock Leadership Spine HL7-14 (£33,538 – 40,455 dependent upon
qualifications and experiences). Other benefits include a bonus system.
Selection Process
Those candidates whose applications we are pursuing will be contacted shortly after the closing date and invited to
interview. They will be asked to bring some evidence of both their own and their students’ work.
The interview process will take place over one day. Candidates will be asked to teach one observed lesson, and
will be given a tour of the Academy by a student. Candidates will be asked to bring with them to interview any
certificates relating to qualifications mentioned on the application form.
