Class 9A Epimetheus, Pandora, Prometheus Group Odysseus & Penelope Group Summary Odysseus and Penelope’s story is about Odysseus’ journey and Penelope’s life when Odysseus is gone. Odysseus first sets off to battle in Troy and the journey there and including the fight lasted 10 years. The gods that once favored him (Athena mostly) went against him when they burned down Troy. Poseidon destroyed the ships, but Odysseus didn’t die. Odysseus had to wander for 10 years lost going to many different journeys and trying to go home. The gods felt pity for Odysseus and when Poseidon was gone, the gods agreed to let Athena help him go home (Poseidon was still mad). Odysseus finally got home and was disguised as a beggar. He meets his son, Telemachus, and planned on what to do with the suitors in his house. During all of this, Penelope had to suffer from thinking that Odysseus might be dead and the suitors who said that they wouldn’t leave her house unless she picked one of them to remarry. She tried to lie but she got caught. She made a challenge telling the suitors that whoever could use Odysseus’ bow and shot an arrow though 12 rings, she would marry. She went to her room with her maids after that. This helped Odysseus’ plan and Odysseus was able to shot through the 12 rings and stared killing the suitors with Telemachus. Penelope was told that Odysseus came back but she didn’t believe it and when to see. Odysseus turned back to his normal self and they all were happy. Character List Odysseus Penelope Telemachus Athena Poseidon The suitors Jason and Medea Group Summary This guy named Jason, the king's son and rightful heir to the throne, came to take the throne from his evil cousin, Pelias. He meets Pelias and says to him: "I'm your cousin, Jason. We need to rule Greece without violence. You can keep all your cool stuff, but give me the throne and the scepter, so we don't fight over them." Pelias replied: "Okay, but first, you need to get this 'Golden Fleece,' and then I'll give you the throne," because he didn't expect Jason to return alive. So Jason invites a whole bunch of people to come along, like Hercules, and a whole bunch of other people. The goddess Hera planned to help them. They set sail on the Argo. Their first stop was a dangerous island of all women. Hercules and another guy get stuck on the island and forget all about the Golden Fleece, so they leave without them. After a while, they finally make it to the place with the Golden Fleece. Hera asked Aphrodite for help, and she made the daughter of the king of the city fall in love with Jason. Her name was Medea, and she knew how to do magic. Aphrodite went to Cupid and got him to do what she asked. Jason and the Argonauts go to the king to ask for the fleece. Cupid makes Medea fall in love with Jason, and she runs off. Later, Jason asks for the fleece. King Eetes gets really mad, but hides it. He sets up a bunch of trials Jason must face in order to get the fleece. Medea figures out her father's plan. Jason decides to get Medea's help. He goes to her and she doesn't know what to say, and she gives him a special ointment that makes the person who rubs it on their body immune to harm for the day. She tells him what to do about the strange creatures in the trials. They both fall head-over-heels in love with each other. Jason and his men defeated the creature, and despite the king's promise, he refused to give them the fleece. Hera made Medea run to Jason, and she told him that they needed the fleece, and that there was a serpent guarding the fleece that she could lull to sleep. Jason promises to marry her, and they went off, and Medea sang the serpent to sleep. They stole the fleece and ran like mad away from the island, and sailed back. Medea's brother goes after them, but she kills him. They face more trials while going back. Jason took the Golden Fleece back to Pelias, who Jason found out had killed his father and mother. Jason wants revenge, so Medea put Pelias to sleep and had his daughters cut him up. Then Jason, while Medea suffers from what she did, tells her he never loved her, and that she was too reckless. Medea kills her and Jason's children in her rage, and then flies away on a chariot while Jason mourns all his losses. Hercules was the most famous hero of ancient times. He was worshiped over Greece as well as Rome, and he had more stories told about him then any other hero. The story of Hercules begins when he is young. He is the son of Zeus. His mother was a woman named Alceme When he was young, two snakes had entered his crib. He killed them. Hera had been angry at Zeus for having an affair with another woman. She, from that point on, would make Hercules’s life miserable. When Hercules was older, and had become a great warrior, he married Megara, a princess. They had 3 children. At one point, Hera made Hercules go mad. In this fit he killed his family. To be forgiven for his actions, he has to go through 12 labors. Hercules slays creatures as a Cerberus and a hydra. He marries Deinaira, a beautiful woman. After she accidentally poisons him, she kills herself out of sorrow. After Hercules sees her dead, he asks his friends and followers to build a pyre and burn him to death. In the end, Hercules is a great and important hero in Greek mythology. He had inspired many Greek writers to write about him, and make many versions of his story. He has contributed much to Greek and world culture. He goes and asks if he will ever have a son but the answer was no and that he will only have is daughter Danae. He learns the Danae's son will kill him. Acrisius decides to put Danae in a bronze "house" and casts themselves off to sea. Danae and Zeus had sex and created Perseus. Danae had to hide him for her father but he soon finds him. He thinks that Zeus will get mad if he kills an offspring of Zeus(Perseus). He decides to put Danae and Perseus in a chest. They later are found on an island by Dictys. Dictys takes Danae and Perseus as his own with his wife. Perseus grows up and becomes a strong man. Polydectes, dictys' brother was king of the island and fell in love with Danae. Polydectes asked Danae to marry him but she refused thus making Polydectes very upset. He announced that he was getting married and invited Perseus to the "party." Perseus came to the "party" with no present because he had nothing to give. Polydectes was furious and said to get him the head of Medusa. Perseus accepted the challenge. Perseus then went off on the journey. Perseus was helped by Athena and Hermes. Hermes help lead Perseus to the three old women. The three old women told Perseus where the gorgons where which was where Medusa was. Then he got to the land where the gorgons where and found them asleep he carefully walked up to her without looking at her face and cut it off. He escaped before the other gorgons could get him. On his way back to the island where he lived he came across a beautiful woman named Andromeda. He saved her from the monster the was to eat her. He married her and returned to his island. He found Polydectes and his followers and turned them all to stone with Medusa's head. Then found his mother and made Dictys the king of the island. Then Perseus went off and killed his grandfather Acrisius. Characters Perseus Medusa Danae Polydectes Dictys Hermes Athena Andromeda Acrisius Theseus and the Minotaur Group Summary When Theseus was born his father left and told his mother that when he was strong enough he should lift a boulder where he left belongings for him and then he should come and meet him in Athens with the belongings. Theseus grew up with his mom when he was 16 years old his mom told him about his father who was the king of Athens and the boulder. Theseus lifted the boulder on his first try and then went on a journey to Athens to meet his father. He recognized him cause he brought the belongings from the boulder. His father then told him about the minotaur who was a monster that was part bull and lived on an island and ate children. Theseus offered to be a victim. When he arrived at Crete, Ariadne the king's daughter fell in love with him and asked Daedalus, creator of the labyrinth, to tell her how to escape the maze. Daedalus told her this information and she then told Theseus. Theseus defeated the Minotaur using this information. Theseus, Aridane, and the other victims left Crete. We are not sure which story is true but it is said that Theseus left Ariadne on the Island of Naxos. On his way into Athens, Theseus forgot to change the black sails to white sails, like he promised his father. Seeing this Theseus father killed himself because he thought that Theseus was dead. Thseus then became king. Characters Important Characters: Theseus, The Minotaur, Ariadne, Daedalus, Minos, King Aegeus Orpheus & Eurydice Summary Orpheus was an amazing musician who sang and played the lyre. He fell in love with Eurydice, who had fallen for him and his talent. They loved each other unconditionally, and got married. After the marriage, Eurydice was walking in the meadow with her bridesmaids. Suddenly a viper came along and stung her. The venom instantly killed her. Orpheus approached as Eurydice was being taken away to the Underworld. He tried to go after her, knowing there was no way he would be able to chase after her. But he would not give up on trying to get his love back. So Orpheus journeyed to the Underworld, hoping to get the god of the Underworld, Hades, to give Eurydice back to him. He finally got to the gates to find Cerberus, the three-headed dog standing guard. Orpheus was not scared, because he knew the the music from his lyre and his beautiful voice would make Cerberus relax his guard, making it much easier to get through the gates into the Underworld. As Orpheus played, Hades and his wife Persephone drew nearer. They found his music beautiful, like everyone else and listened to his song. In his song, he was singing about getting his lovely Eurydice back. Hades was touched and decided to give her back to Orpheus. Under one condition, Orpheus could not look back at Eurydice until they had both reached daylight. Finally, Orpheus reached daylight and turned around to see that Eurydice had not. He reached for her but she quickly slipped back into the Underworld. Orpheus tried to enter the Underworld again, but he was not allowed to. So he miserably wandered around the forest playing his music. Eventually he was killed. Characters Orpheus Eurydice Hades Persephone Icarus & Daedalus Summary While working for King Minos of Crete,Daedalus builds a labyrinth for the Minotaur created from King Minos' wife and a white bull she "mysteriously" fell in love with. After a few years though, Theseus, a great hero, hears about how the Minotaur has been devouring innocent people for food. So,Theseus travels to Crete to defeat this beast, now, King Minos' daughter, Ariadne, falls in love with Theseus and asks Daedalus to help Theseus defeat the Minotaur. Daedalus agrees, because she's the king's daughter,so he helps Theseus by having him tie a string to the entrance of the labyrinth so he can find his way back. Once the Minotaur is defeated,Theseus runs off with Ariadne and King Minos is enraged when he hears this.He blames daedalus for his daughter's departure,so he locks Daedalus and his son Icarus into the labyrinth. But Daedalus is determined to get out as soon as possible,so he creates wings out of feathers and wax for both him and his son. Once the wings are finished,Icarus and Daedalus use them to soar into the air and escape the giant maze. While they are in the air,Daedalus warns his son not to fly to low,because the water will drench his his dry wings,and not high,because the sun will melt the wax on his wings,but being difficult,Icarus doesn't listen,too caught up in his excitement at being in the sky, so he flies to hight,the sun melts his wings,and falls into the water below and drowns.Daedalus looks and looks,but the only thing he finds are his son's wings floating in the water. So Daedalus flees to Italy where he tricks King Minos,who's still looking for him,at his own plan to trick Daedalus. When Agamemnon is sailing to be the Greek leader in the Trojan war. He insults the goddess of hunt and in order to continue he must sacrifice his daughter Ipheginia. When he sacrifices her his wife, Clytamnaestra, becomes very angry. Clytamnaestra finds a lover and together they kill Agamemnon. When Clytamnaestra and her lover become king and queen their other kids, Electra and Orestes plot to kill them. After Orestes kills his mother he is surrounded by furies sent as punishment. He travels alone trying to get rid of them and in this time he faces his guilt and overcomes it. Apolo comes to Orestes and tells him to go to Athens and plead his case to Athena.
