THEATRE ARTS Introductory Theatre (0912) 1.0 Credit; Unweighted Length: Year; Format: Meets Daily This course deals with the many aspects of creativity in the realm of theatre. The first quarter develops an understanding of theatre, what it is, how it functions and basic actor techniques. In later quarters, students will design a set, design costumes, write a one act play and continue exploratory acting work. They will complete short scenes, monologues, and basic acting through improvisation throughout the year. A classroom performance is included in the second semester. Intermediate Theatre (0922) 1.0 Credit; Unweighted Length: Year; Format: Meets Daily Grade(s): 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite(s): Introductory Theatre and/or Teacher Permission This sequential course continues the study of acting in the theatre curriculum. Students prepare scene work from both classic and modern playwrights. Relaxation exercises and analysis of characters are intrinsic to this course. A children’s play is performed for elementary students. Performing Shakespeare (0932) 1.0 Credit; Unweighted Length: Year; Format: Meets Daily Grade(s): 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite(s): None, but Teacher Permission if no prior theatre study This course is for students who are interested in exploring the works of William Shakespeare through acting. The course develops acting skills from sonnets to complex scene work and monologues. Students should understand that memorization of scenes is a requirement for the course. Vocal exercises are included that introduce students to correct articulation and projection. Teacher permission is needed if there has been no prior theatre study. Advanced Theatre Honors (0942) 1.0 Credit; Weighted Length: Year; Format: Meets Daily Grade(s): 11, 12 Prerequisite(s): Completion of 790, 792 and 795 or Teacher Recommendation This course is the culmination of the theatre sequence and explores acting through extensive scene work from playwrights Harold Pinter, Henrik Ibsen, and Anton Chekhov. Character development and subtext are the focus of the classroom experience. Students should be prepared to work in detail with the characterization explored through the scenes assigned.
