WONG KAR WAI DREAMS
Creative Team and Cast
DARREN NG
SOUND DESIGNER/MUSICIAN
Darren graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts in
Theatre Studies and Philosophy. He has been active in the theatre and sound art scene
for the last six years. With two nominations under his belt, he won the coveted award of
Best Sound Designer at the 6th Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards 2006. He was also
the recipient of the 5th Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards 2005: Honourable Mention for
Special Achievement, for Best Sound. He is currently working on a sound design
installation for the new National Museum, where his work will be a main feature in the
exhibition for the next five years. As a sound artist, his ambisonic brainchild - SonicBrat,
earned him an audio signature in the underground music and sound movement.
He is currently the Associate Sound Designer of The Finger Players.
LIM WOAN WEN
LIGHTING DESIGNER
A lighting designer by profession, Woan Wen is a nocturnal being with an acute interest
in light, darkness and the whole spectrum within. Recipient of the NAC Arts Professional
Scholarship 2001, she was trained and educated at The Hong Kong Academy for
Performing Arts and the National University of Singapore. Presently, she is an Associate
Lighting Designer with The Finger Players. She was most recently awarded the best
lighting design award at the 6th Life! Theatre Awards 2006 for her work Between the
Devil and the Deep Blue Sea with the company. Besides working closely with theatre
and dance companies, Woan Wen has also been creating independent lighting pieces in
collaboration with artists from various fields. Some of these works include: S. A. D, light
sketches and CONTROLROOMLIVEUNIT.
OLIVER CHONG
PUPPET DESIGNER/CONCEPTUALIST + WONG KAR WAI ENSEMBLE
Oliver is a full-time artist with The Finger Players
An interior design graduate from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Oliver has acted
with many companies such as The Necessary Stage, the Theatre Practice and Drama
Box. Some of his acting credits include First Family, Between the Devil and the Deep
Blue Sea, 3 Little Monks (The Finger Players), Lao Jiu (The Theatre Practice), Shit Hole
and Liao Zai (Drama Box).
Oliver has also designed the set in Drama Box’s Fugitive and Beautiful Day. At the 6th
Life! Theatre awards 2006, his set design for The Finger Players’ Twisted was
nominated for Best Set Design. He was also nominated for Best Ensemble Acting for
Drama Boxes’ Shit Hole at the 5th Life! Theatre awards 2005.
As a full-time artist with The Finger Players, Oliver often performs and designs in many
Reach Out! and International Season productions by the company.
He made his directorial effort with I’m Just a Piano Teacher for which he was nominated
Best Director at the 7th Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards. The production which saw
him wearing many hats of a writer and puppet/set designer was nominated for 3 other
awards including Best Production of the Year and Best Ensemble Acting award.
SERENE CHEN
LING
Serene graduated from the National University of Singapore with a B.A. (Hons) in
Theatre Studies. She was awarded the 5th Life! Theatre Awards’ Best Supporting
Actress for her role in Wild Rice’s production of Landmarks: Asian Boys Vol. 2. In the
same year, she was also nominated for Best Actress for her part in Toy Factory Theatre
Ensemble’s Mergers & Wills.
Some of Serene’s more seminal productions include The Necessary Stage’s acclaimed
productions of Sea and Galileo… I feel the earth move, as well as the Singapore and
Taiwan runs of Invisibility. She also performed in Action Theatre’s hit musical Chang and
Eng, which played to full houses in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, as well as Dramabox’s
Mandarin musical, Mr Beng – all this in between her jobs as a Producer-Presenter with
arts radio station, Passion 99.5FM and later, with SPH Mediaworks.
Other plays in which she acted include TheatreWorks’ Watching The Clouds Go By,
Singapore Repertory Theatre’s Prospero’s Children, Luna-id’s The Physicists and Wild
Rice’s Jointly & Severably.Most recently, she was seen in Everything but the Brain
produced by Action Theatre.
One of Serene’s most enduring film roles is “Irene”, in last year’s landmark local film,
Singapore Dreaming,
CHRISTINA SERGEANT
THE ‘OLDER’ LING
Christina is a seasoned performer/director who has acted and guest directed with a
number of companies in Singapore including The Necessary Stage, TheatreWorks,
Luna-id , Asia-in-Theatre Research Centre and including her own company, Mime
Unlimited. She was the Artistic Director of STARS (Singapore Theatre’s American
Repertory Showcase) from 1985-88 and co-director of Actors Theatre Circle with Shirley
Smith. She was an instructor of mime, stage movement and comedy skills at LaSalle
School of Performing Arts, Drama Department from 1991-2001 and a guest instructor of
mime and commedia dell’Arte at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore.
Some of her acting credits include The Visit of The Tai-Tai (Wild Rice), The Glass
Menagerie
and Agnes of God (Luna-Id) for which she was nominated Best Supporting Actress at
the Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards. She was also nominated for the Best Director
Award at the 5th Life! Theatre Awards for her direction for Furthest North, Deepest
South (The Finger Players and Mime Unlimited)
She is presently the Vice-President of Singapore Drama Educators Association (SDEA)
KAREN TAN
TRISH
Karen is possibly the only stage actor in Singapore who has played the widest range of
roles, including men, animals, one murderer, 3 ghosts, and a varied assortment of
women (mainly hysterical). She feels this gives her strength of character; in reality, it
only confuses her.
Karen is privileged to have worked with TheatreWorks, The Necessary Stage, Action
Theatre, Dramaplus Arts, Escape Theatre, luna-id, SRT’s The Little Company, Wild Rice,
Toy Factory, and Cake Theatrical Productions. She has lived and worked in the UK and
Vienna, and performed in Kuala Lumpur, Cairo and New Zealand. However, she’s
happiest in Singapore, where she’s a working mum with just about the best job in the
world.
Wong Kar Wai Dreams is her second production with The Finger Players, after First
Family.
Karen supports Women Make A Difference (WMD) International in their fight against
child sex tourism and trafficking. She’s also an ambassador for Empowered to Protect,
the campaign to create awareness and prevention of cervical cancer in Singapore.
LOONG SENG ONN
BERNARD
Unwilling to lead the life of a struggling artist, Seng Onn moonlights as an actor by night
while playing the part of civil servant by day. He has been dabbling in theatre ever since
the eighties when he first discovered that it was possible to trade-in his ho-hum
existence for that of some infinitely more colourful character on stage. Ever since then,
he has been persuading his assorted bosses that his involvement in theatre is important/
relevant/ useful/ adds value to his paying job. His favourite productions include many
stage productions with TheatreWorks such as Conference of the Birds, Three Children,
Lao Jiu and Beauty World. Seng Onn continues to bide his time whilst patiently waiting
to be talent-scouted for some hit TV sitcom in order to make lots of money from product
endorsements. Seng Onn is a proud member of the Association of Singapore Actors.
TAN BENG TIAN
WONG KAR WAI ENSEMBLE
Beng Tian is the Artistic Director of The Finger Players.
She holds a Diploma of Graphics Design from LaSalle-SIA College of the Arts. Her
acting credits with the company include Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,
Twisted, ‘3 to 6’ series -Miss Mouse and First Family. For her involvement in I’m Just a
Piano Teacher, she was award the Best Ensemble Acting Award at the 7th Life! Theatre
Awards. She has also worked with many theatre companies such as The Theatre
Practice, Toy Factory Theatre Ensemble and W!ld Rice as a puppeteer/designer. Her
most recent puppet designs were seen in Wild Rice’s Jack and the Bean Sprout. The
giant, singing harp and the growing bean sprout were some of the magical creations she
had helped make for Jack and the Bean Sprout.
Beng Tian is a recipient of the JCCI (Japanese Chamber of commerce & industry)
Singapore Foundation Culture Award 2005 for her excellent work in promoting puppetry
in Singapore.
ONG KIAN SIN
WONG KAR WAI ENSEMBLE
In 1995, Ong Kian Sin co-founded The Finger Players with Tan Beng Tian, Artistic
Director of the company. He has since performed and toured extensively with the
company as a puppeteer/designer. His directorial debut, Pigs can Fly, won accolades
from both audience and theatre practitioners in 2004. His two other directorial works
Twisted and Miss Mouse were also well received by audience and critics alike. He often
designs the puppets for the company. His puppet creations were seen in Furthest North,
Deepest South, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, Twisted, First Family and
Miss Mouse.
Kian Sin is a full time Artist with The Finger Players.
ANG HUI BIN
WONG KAR WAI ENSEMBLE
A graduate from National University of Singapore's Theatre Studies Program, Hui Bin
has worked with companies such as The Necessary Stage, Drama Box and CAKE
Theatrical Productions.
Her stage credits include Boner (Drama Box), BOTE (The Necessary Stage) and Animal,
Vegetable, Mineral by CAKE,
Hui Bin is currently a full-time Artist with The Finger Players. She was most recently
seen performing in Furthest North, Deepest South and First Family, winning the Best
Ensemble Acting award for the former at the 5th Life! Theatre Awards 2005, and
nominated for the same award for the latter production at the 7th Life! Theatre Awards
