Theatre Royal: RAWspace Program 2017
Attention - Tasmanian Independent Artists
The Theatre Royal, in association with Tasmania Performs and Ten Days on the Island is seeking
proposals from Independent Tasmanian Artists to develop new theatre work through the RAWspace
Program.
WHAT IT IS …
The RAWspace Program will run in two stages, and you are invited to SUBMIT A PROPOSAL NOW to
participate in Stage One. Applications close Friday 26th August 2016.
If selected to participate in STAGE ONE, the artists will each receive:
 A one week residency in the Theatre Royal Backspace, with use of sound and lighting.
 You’ll be able to develop your production in a professional theatre environment.
 This will take place between Nov 2016 and Jan 2017, subject to the artist’s and the
venue’s availability.
 Access to mentors and industry professionals.
 Advice and support will be available on aspects of performance and production.
 An opportunity to present a “showing” of the work-in-progress to a selection panel comprised
of professional performing arts programmers
 This may lead to the project being selected for Stage Two of the Program.
If selected to participate in STAGE TWO, the artists will each receive:
 Programming as part of The Theatre Royal 2017 season and Ten Days on the Island 2017.
 The work will be part of a program of new Tasmanian works, to be presented in the
Theatre Royal Backspace during Ten Days on the Island in March 2017. The work will be
marketed as part of the program for Ten Days on the Island 2017 and also within the
Theatre Royal 2017 Season.
 A performance fee of $2000.
1
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
The RAWspace Program is open to Tasmanian Independent Artists.
 Preference will be given to early career artists.
 Artists should have been resident in Tasmania for at least the last six months.
 It is understood that individuals may be working with or receiving support from a funded
company. This does not preclude an individual from applying but it is important that the
proposal comes from the individual artist and not a funded company.
WHAT TYPE OF WORK WILL BE CONSIDERED?
 We are looking for text and non-text based drama, puppetry, dance-theatre, physical-theatre,
new media, musical-theatre or any combination of the above.
 Original work is preferred although adaptations of existing work will be considered.
 Works will need to be at an already advanced stage of development to take best advantage of
this opportunity to work toward production within Ten Days on the Island.
 The work should be a minimum of 30 minutes in length and not longer than 60 minutes in
length, complete works are preferred but an excerpt of a larger work may be considered.
WHAT TYPE OF WORK WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED?
We are not looking for:
 A script-in-hand play reading.
 Stand-up comedians.
 Song-writers, bands or composers.
 However such artists may wish to submit a proposal, and present a compelling argument to
convince us to do otherwise.
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY PROPOSAL?
A selection panel, chaired by the Theatre Royal, will consider all proposals and select people to
participate in Stage One.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY PROPOSAL IS ACCEPTED?
As Part of Stage One, you will be offered:
 RAWspace Bootcamp - an opportunity for all successful Stage One applicants to familiarise
themselves with the program, the venue and the other participating artists.


Use of the Theatre Royal Backspace for one week, between November 2016 and January 2017,
at a time to be mutually agreed.
Where possible and subject to negotiation, support and advice, in a variety of areas including
marketing, dramaturgy, design or production will be available during this period.
WILL MY WORK THEN BE PRESENTED IN STAGE TWO?
Not necessarily!
 At the end of your Backspace residency you will present a showing of your work to the selection
panel.
2

The panel will select which of the Stage One works will go on to be part of Stage Two, involving
presentation within Ten Days on the Island. Feedback will be offered to those whose work does
not proceed to Stage Two.
WILL MY SHOW FIT ON THE BACKSPACE STAGE?
Before you submit your EOI you must be confident that the work is able to be presented in the Theatre
Royal Backspace. You will be sharing the stage, a standard but flexible lighting rig and audio equipment
with one or possibly two other productions. Your set, props and costumes must be kept to a minimum
and you MUST be able to set up and strike your show during a 20 minute interval. Note: There are no
screens or data projectors provided so multi-media artists need to bring their own.

 A short description of the work (ONE page maximum)
 Biogs of key artists, (include performers, design and creative team)
 Any existing reviews or critique of the work, if they exist
