Overview of WPC Assessment 3
Assessment 3: Reflective journal – weighting up to 40%
As you complete the managing a small project paper (822) you will be expected to keep a journal of your
communications – below is a template you may choose to use for your diary entries.
This is a tool for you to record and reflect on your own communication styles and by reflecting on your
successes and difficulties consider how you could improve your communication at another time in a similar
situation
Part 1
As part of the 822 course you must keep a journal in which you reflect on your communication
experiences during the period of the managing a small project topic.
In this section, I am looking for evidence that you are thinking about your own communication habits,
strengths and weaknesses in communicating, and considering what you can do to improve them.
Marks will be awarded for:

regular entries (at least 8 different entries are expected)

a variety of your communication pathways are recorded / reflected on
o Verbal (content of words spoken)
o Written (content / register)
o Other (tone of voice, body language)
Note most of our messages (55%) are through body language, and a large
percentage (38%) through our tone of voice or the way we say things. Only
7% of or communication is the content of our words

your realistic reflections on your own experiences. (Marks will not be awarded
for how successful or otherwise the communications are.)
Part 2
This part requires you to write a concise report about what you have learned about your own communication
style. This will be written after 822 is completed and your reflective journal is finalised.
You will discuss the following:

What are my preferred communication styles?

What are my strengths?

What are my weaknesses?

What can I do to make my communication more effective?
You must REFER to entries in your journal to support your discussion. You may also refer to your portfolio
(assessment task 2) for additional evidence to support your discussion.
Your report should be 300 – 500 words long

Notes on the communications
appropriateness AND effectiveness
(including notes on what you did
well[strengths] +
poorly[weaknesses])
Appropriateness: Informal – good as I
was going to miss day so didn’t want to
tell staff what they had to do but
meeting drag on a bit as no clear agenda
of what we were aiming for or what
meeting was about
Effectiveness: Okay as jobs allocated
but could have involved staff more in
decisions
I tend to dominate meetings so tried not
to put my views but instead let staff
decide what they wanted.
Still interjected too much with my
opinions
Appropriateness:
Effectiveness:
COL 7
Notes on possible improvements
(focus on approaches that use your
strengths and those that overcome
[or avoid] your weaknesses)
Meeting would have gone better (more
productive / quicker) if we all sat round
a table, as eye contact would have been
kept so keeping us on task
Should have given each staff member in
turn an opportunity to give their
opinions  when all ideas expressed
have discussion and allocate jobs
Must prepare agenda BEFORE all staff
meetings
Other thoughts
Less roadblocks (judgements)
Invite questions
Draw diagrams (not just telling)
Avoid defensive behaviour like making
jokes
Additional notes on communication barriers
“Good 2 way communication is the life blood of team work
and if messages can be understood in different ways it will be understood in just that way which does
MOST harm”
Noise is anything that interferes with the communication process, and includes:

Work-space and external noise; eg a loud TV, a distracting sight, speaker speaking too softly

Psychological noise or forces within the communicator that interfere with the ability to express
or understand a message correctly; eg exaggeration, being emotional

Physiological noise; eg poor hearing, illness

Language / cultural; eg. different value systems

Interpersonal; eg power relationships between communicators

Semantic noise; eg technical jargon
