Elements in the Earth’s Crust
Even thought there are 92 elements that are naturally found, only eight of them are common in
the rocks that make up the Earth’s outer layer, the crust. Together, these eight elements make
up more than 98% of the crust.

1. Water and carbon dioxide are not elements, they are chemical compounds. A chemical
compound is a pure substance made up of two or more elements bonded chemically
together. List the chemical formulas and names of three other compounds.

2. What element(s) are found in the earth, the atmosphere, and in the body?
3. Are most of the elements metals or non-metals?
How many are there of each
in your table above?
