SIMPLE CHEMICAL REACTIONS (TS3-EP)
WHEN A CANDLE IS ALIGHT
TASK
Using knowledge of this topic,
draw a poster to explain what
changes occur when a candle
is lit. Use the top tips below and
level ladder to help you reach
your target level.
TOP TIPS






Levels 3 and 4
Draw a candle like the one above.
Label where there is a change of state happening and where there is a
chemical reaction happening.
Write down the differences between a physical and chemical change.
Draw particle diagrams to show the changes of state.
Levels 5-7
Divide your candle in half; on one side show the physical change, on the
other the chemical change.
Paraffin wax (C25H52) contains hydrogen and carbon particles; you can
represent these using coloured particles and a key. There are particles in the
air that could be represented in the same way.
Key Words Levels 3 and 4
burning, chemical change, condensation, evaporation, fuel, gas, liquid,
melting, physical change, solid, solidify, wax
KEY WORDS LEVELS 5-7
burning, carbon, chemical change, condensation, evaporation, fuel,
hydrogen, melting, oxygen, physical change, products, reactants, solidify,
wax
KEY WORDS LEVELS 8 AND EP
burning, carbon, chemical change, condensation, evaporation, fuel,
hydrocarbon, hydrogen, melting, oxygen, physical change, products,
reactants, solidify, water, wax
