Catalog Description:
A practicum developing concepts learned in SURG 110 and 111. Students are assigned to
affiliated agencies where they practice skills related to surgical techniques and principles.
They participate actively as members of the surgical team, developing the skills
necessary to scrub and assist in circulating during surgical procedures under supervision.
A course fee is required.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
 Prepare supplies used in the operating room
 Operate an autoclave
 Identify a break in aseptic technique
 Demonstrate proficiency in handling basic surgical instruments
 Perform a surgical hand scrub
 Complete gowning and gloving for surgical procedures
 Gown and glove members of the surgical team
 Measure solutions accurately
 Assist in positioning the patient as designated for each procedure
 Transport a patient using correct body mechanics and safety procedures
 Utilize standard precautions in all instances

Assist the surgical team during common surgical procedures as an independent
practitioner. These procedures include but are not limited to: D&C, breast
biopsy, inguinal hernia repair, excision of superficial lesions, carpal tunnel
release, hemorrhoidectomy, myringotomy and tubes, T&A, simple appendectomy
