Care Delivery observe and participate in the communication of information and support, to patients, relatives and appropriate clinical staff, within the acute surgical care setting engage in therapeutic relationships in professional care participate in the assessment of care needs and the planning of pre and post operative care using a problem solving approach and the relevant framework for care analyse and interpret clinical data accurately and act accordingly incorporate research and other evidence into clinical practice participate in the documentation and evaluation of planned surgical care participate, under supervision where necessary, in the direct delivery of care related to: safe, physical and psychological preparation for and care after a surgical procedure pain assessment and relief personal cleansing and dressing maintaining oral hygiene prevention of cross infection - surgical wound and drain care maintaining nutritional status - oral, enteral and parenteral feeding 2 monitoring vital signs monitoring fluid balance - intravenous therapy - blood transfusion - nasogastric intubation maintaining and monitoring eliminatory status - urinary - urine testing, catheter care - bowel - administration of aperients and suppositories administration of medications - oral, inhalatory, topical, rectal, intra-muscular and subcutaneous injection patient education and health promotion promoting patient participation in care emergency situations care of the dying and final act of care participate in/attend as appropriate diagnostic investigations and surgical procedures observe and participate in interdisciplinary aspects of therapy e.g. with surgeon, physiotherapist, stoma therapist, tissue viability nurse. Care Management participate in promoting a care environment that ensures optimal health and safety within the surgical setting e.g. informed consent prioritise and provide rationales for pre and post operative care delivery identify and report hazards for patients, staff and others in the health care environment participate as appropriate in the organisation of, and developments in, the delivery of care within the acute surgical setting. 3 participate and collaborate in interdisciplinary aspects of therapy e.g. with surgeon, physiotherapist, speech therapist, tissue viability nurse participate in literary, numeracy and computer skills relevant to the administration of medication and organisation of surgical care data. participate in ongoing/transfer and discharge planning participate in the liaison between hospital and community care settings.
