Notes on Verbs Verb (BK page L69) – expresses action or state of being Action Verb – tells what action a subject is performing physical action: The dog barked at the birds. mental action, ownership, or possession: The student studied for the test. The teacher has a sinus infection. Verb Phrase – includes main verb plus any helping verbs (auxiliary) The birds will fly south for the winter. The teacher should have stayed home from school. (The verb phrase may be interrupted by other words) Ex: She can never sing the right notes. (“never” is an adverb. It is not part of the verb phrase.) Common Helping Verbs am have is has are had was do were does being did been may be might must can could shall should will would Verb notes page #1 Linking Verbs (Helping Verbs) (BK page L75)– links the subject with another word in the sentence which renames or describes it Ex: She is my friend. Is links friend with she and renames it. Ex: My teacher is awesome. Is links awesome to teacher and describes. Linking verbs are often part of verb phrases: Ex: Freshmen can be immature.
