Interdisciplinary Project (Math / Science)
OBJECTIVE: Make a PowerPoint to show mathematical aspects between mathematics and astronomy.
-Required to elaborate mathematically on the topic chosen.
-Your PowerPoint presentation should cover at least all the topics listed in the rubric.
Ex. If your topic is Saturn you would have a presentation over weight conversions, age conversions,
converting the distance from the sun from kilometers to miles, and the planets size compared to earth. The
presentation would not need to include the history and facts about the planet and it’s rings.
Choose one of the following topics and research the information listed in the rubric
Planets
Constellations
Sun
Orion
Mercury
Big dipper and little dipper
Venus
Dragon (Draco)
Mars
Great Bear (Ursa Major)
Jupiter
Lion (Leo)
Saturn
Hercules
Uranus
Pegasus
Neptune
The twins ( Gemini)
Pluto
Whale ( Cetus)
Others
(you will need to check with Mrs. Johnson to make sure you covered adequate mathematical topics)
Telescopes- angles, frequency of different types of waves. Radio/x-ray/infrared
Hubble’s Law – expanding universe
Supernova
Light year
Global Positioning System
You will present your research during the final exam period.
Project Rubric
Content
Possible Points
Score
60 points- Accurate and clear mathematical calculations and explanations.
Give examples.
Planets- How do you calculate weight conversions for your planet?
How do you calculate age conversions?
Compare the size of your planet to earth?
How do you convert the distance from your planet to the sun in kilometers to
miles?
Constellations- Show how you could graph the constellation using ordered
pairs? ( you may do this by hand and I will scan in on to the computer, or
you can find an xy-coordinate plane online and add the dots on Power Point)
What is some general information about your constellation? Ex. Mythology
Discuss the size of the constellation?
Other Topics – Please check with Mrs. Johnson to make sure that you are
covering a good sum of mathematical content in your project.
All projectsHave 6 slides or more including your slide of sources and title slide
Have at least 3 graphics
Have all text in large font
Presentation 20 points- The material in your presentation is clearly shown in the Power
Quality and Point and clearly verbalized to the class. Speak clearly, stand, don’t sit, and
Power Point make sure to ask for questions at the end of the presentation.
Citation of
References
10 points- You must have at least 3 sources which can be textbooks,
websites, or any other legitimate sources.
List these on you last slide.
Work Ethic
10 points- Used time wisely during the week. Points will be taken off if you
are not persistently working on your project all week.
Total
100 points
Due date: Day of the final exam.
