LESSON 2 – NEW IDEAS IN EUROPE Europe in the 1300s and 1400s = a period of time that was called Renaissance Renaissance—means “rebirth” in learning and knowledge. This meant people were excited to learn new things! During the Renaissance time period, technology in Europe became really important. The changes in technology allowed the people to use tools to do things better and more rapidly. In 1454, Johannes Gutenburg developed the printing press. o The printing press made it possible to print many copies quickly. Navigation tools helped European exploration by making navigation easier and more accurate. o o o o o SAILS COMPASS MAPS ASTROLABE NEW SHIPS Europeans sailors learned about the compass from North Africans. o A compass is an instrument with a magnetic needle that always points north. The Chinese invention GUN ships. Prince Henry of Portugal created a school of navigation. The Portuguese named the tip of Africa the Cape of Good Hope.
