No. 350 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Representatives from the American Diabetes Association, the Texas Diabetes Council, the Texas chapters of the American Association of Diabetes Educators, and the Central Texas Diabetes Coalition are visiting the State Capitol on March 17, 2009, in an effort to raise awareness about the diabetes epidemic; and WHEREAS, A disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, diabetes can lead to such complications as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, neuropathy, and loss of limbs; type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, while type 2 diabetes usually develops in adulthood and is the most common form of the disease; and WHEREAS, Diabetes is the fifth-leading cause of death by disease in the United States; more than 23 million American children and adults suffer from the disease, and another 57 million have pre-diabetes; in Texas alone, some 2.2 million persons aged 18 and older are believed to have diabetes; and WHEREAS, Obesity is a major contributing factor to the onset of type 2 diabetes, and studies have shown that maintaining a healthy weight and undertaking regular physical activity can be important factors in protecting against this condition; and Page - 1 - H.R. No. 350 WHEREAS, The well-being of Texas residents is an issue of paramount importance, and Diabetes Day at the State Capitol serves to educate the public about the causes, symptoms, and risk factors of this prevalent disease; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby recognize March 17, 2009, as Diabetes Day at the State Capitol and urge all Texans with diabetes to get the attention they need and all those at risk for the disease to take preventive action.
