All projects MUST INCLUDE descriptions of the organelles & color drawings/pictures
(refer to rubric)
A. Cell Factory: In a Shoebox
The Cell has many organelles. Each organelle has its own specific function or job. Many times the Eukaryotic
Cell has been described as a factory. Each organelle has its own specific function in the cell. For example, the nucleus
is the control center of the cell. So in your factory, the nucleus would be the “Boss” since it is in control of things.
Create a 3-D model of a cell factory in a shoebox. List the job in the factory as well as the ‘real” function of the part in
the cell. A complete list of the functions and the part of the factory that they represent must also be attached. It can be
hand-written neatly or typed double space. Be sure to include color. Non-perishable items only (no candy, no food,
etc.)
B. “Cell Island” – Tri-fold Brochure
Create a travel brochure of either an animal cell or a plant cell. You must indicate which type of cell you are
describing in the brochure. Imagine that you are a tour guide and giving a guided tour of the cell. You must describe
the organelles and the functions they perform in the cell. The appearance of the cell part has to be related to the
appearance of a common item. A drawing also needs to be included of each item.
C. Cell Analogies Collage
Webster defines analogy: “A comparison between two things which are similar in some respects, but
otherwise are different; an explaining of something by comparing it point by point with something else.” To complete
this option, you will need to draw and label a plant or animal cell in pencil in the center of your poster. You will
identify the function (or main job) of each organelle and then find a picture of an everyday object that has a similar
function (or use). You will need to write an analogy to show the similarity between the cell part and the everyday
object. Be sure to explain the reasoning behind your analogies. (For example: “The Golgi apparatus is like a post office
because it modifies, sorts and packages protein for delivery like a post office packages and sorts mail for delivery.”)
Be sure to paste the pictures of everyday objects at the edges of the poster board. Label the pictures with your neatly
written analogies and make a pointer to the correct structure in your cell drawing.
D. “Cell” Phone User Guide
Create a user’s manual describing how each of the parts found on the “cell phone” work. Be creative! Think
about the user’s manual that comes with an actual cell phone. The project must be presented in a booklet format and
be typed with illustrations on each page.
E. Cell T-Shirt
Design and create a T-shirt with a picture of a cell on it. Identify the type of cell (plant or animal). Include the
appropriate organelles as listed below and label each directly on the shirt with the functions listed either on the
front or back of the shirt. Use fabric paints, puff paints, scraps of fabric, beads, ribbon, or anything else you would
like. You cannot find a picture of the cell on the internet and use iron-on paper to attach it to a t-shirt; it must be
designed by you! Be creative!
F. Cell Video Advertisement
Create an advertisement slogan and display on a video of either a plant or animal cell to “sell”. The
presentation must be of the persuasive type. Be creative with each and every cell part! You can use the “infomercial”
style to “sell” your cell!!!
G. 3-D Model of a Plant or Animal Cell
Make a three dimensional model of a plant or animal cell. Include all the appropriate organelles listed in
Option 1 that are appropriate for your type of cell. Use whatever materials you like (Styrofoam, wood, clay, etc.) Be
creative!!! The cell must be at least 20 centimeters wide and long. Again, it must contain the appropriate organelles
(and the organelles should be identified with their functions listed; either directly on the model or typed on a
separate piece of paper.
