REAL Theatre
REAL Theatre: Chelsea, Vanessa and Brenda LaPorte
Join us for an exciting and unique theatre experience! We’ll play improv games, learn
character development, perform street theatre, practice team-building exercises and
much more, and combine these with the essentials of performing (diction, projection,
stage presence, etc.), for a thought-provoking, creative and fun theatrical opportunity
for teens of any acting background or level of expertise! In this country, no other
media giant has impacted and influenced the American culture as much as the Disney
franchise has. As part of our curriculum during this session of REAL Theatre, we will
be using improv games & discussion to challenge the societal messages found in
Disney films and stories, then we’ll create skits that address these themes. This course

Magic: The Gathering
Michelle Ciccaglione/ AJ Leet
Magic: The Gathering (known colloquially as Magic or MTG) is a collectible card
game created by mathematics professor Richard Garfield and introduced in 1993 by
Wizards of the Coast. Magic is the first example of the modern collectible card game
genre Each game represents a battle between mighty wizards, known as
"planeswalkers", who employ the magical spells, items, and fantastic creatures depicted
on individual Magic cards to defeat their opponents. Although the original concept of
the game drew heavily from the motifs of traditional fantasy role-playing games such
as Dungeons & Dragons, the gameplay of Magic bears little similarity to pencil-andpaper adventure games, while having substantially more cards and more complex rules
than many other card games.

Documentaries
Cameron Pitre
A documentary is a fun way to show people history thru a video interpretation and
reenacting of historical events, culture and nature, some people may find reading

people to learn more of the subject that the documentary shows.
The documentaries that will be shown in this class will be chosen by me, here is the
list:

From the Ground Up
REAL Theatre: Chelsea, Vanessa and Brenda LaPorte
Do you enjoy debating ethics and morals? Do you think society is fundamentally
flawed? Do you have thoughts and ideas about how to improve the world in which you
live? Each week, “From the Ground Up” will debate and discuss the merits and pitfalls
of each aspect of society as we take on the challenge of attempting to create utopia.
For example: Is there a need for government, and if so, how is it structured? Would
the perfect society have organized religion? What would the educational system look
like? How would healthcare be handled? Housing? How about the laws? Currency?

Creative Writing
Cindy House
Cindy House is one of Green Street’s great resources: someone who gets people to
write for fun! She continues this class from past years. She hopes to continue with the
same students, but also with new students. This class has short, weekly assignments
focusing on things like character development, dialog etc., in the short story format
primarily. Students in past sessions have described this class as their favorite class and
Cindy as one of the best teachers ever. Each class features discussions of reading
assignments, and peer and teacher review of short pieces of writing. Prompts and
topics are suggested and students usually take off in many wild and wonderful ways
with their own pieces.

Modern Society and American Literature
Jonathan Spindel
The object of this course is to study the history and cultural progress of modern society
through the literature of some of the most enduring and influential authors of our time.
We will include the literature of marginalized groups to scratch at the surface of the
“white-washed” canon and grasp the comprehensive truth. In addition to American
literature, we may also include international texts which have had particular influence
on American culture. The course may include novels, poetry, short stories, nonfiction
and plays; though students will choose the direction of the course based on their
interests. By the end of the course, the instructor’s goal is to cultivate politically-aware
and culturally-conscious thought, all while celebrating literature as a record of
historical narrative, vehicle of philosophical thought, and harbinger of social ideology.
BIO
Jonathan Spindel graduated from Wesleyan University in 2011 with a degree in
English and creative writing. He loves literature of all types, especially fiction, and
loves to work with other writers and students. He enjoys public radio, philosophy and
jazz. In the classroom, he strives to foster critical, creative and independent thought in
students.

3-Minute Fiction
Jackie O'Grady
3-Minute fiction is loosely based off of NPR's contest with the same name. Each week,
students will be given certain parameters that must be met when writing their stories.
For instance, everyone needs to include a chipmunk, a honey badger, and a zombie
kitten in their story. The stories should be around 600 words (which takes approx. 3
minutes to read), and the students should be prepared to share their stories with the
class. It is so much fun to hear all the students go home with the same parameters and
return with as many different stories as their are students. This class is perfect for those
kids that are just starting to write their own stories and for those that have been writing
for some time. My younger students in the past even dictate their stories to their
parents who help with the writing. The goal of the class is to show how fun writing can
be!

Please see our friends and business associates at www.saveinparadise.com if you need
to purchase one. They are a restaurant wholesale supply house in East Hartford, open
to the public! (And a ton of fun!)
We do have two cats. (I am indicating this for children with allergies, not that we will
be eating them haha)
Parents can drop off. There are plenty of shopping plazas nearby and Middletown is
only ten minutes away. Teaching Assistants: We need one parent each week - some
parents will have to supervise more than one week.

Introduction to Marine Biology
Ian Gibson
This class is designed to give students an introduction to some of the more important
components of Marine Biology, with a focus on Long Island Sound. The class is
broken up into 2 parts – the 12 week Green Street semester and a 3 hour field trip to
Hammonasset State Beach in early June. The class portion will focus on the geography
and geology of Long Island Sound, an introduction to physical oceanography, climate
and weather patterns, a brief primer to the taxonomy of living things, an intro to
invertebrate biology and common LIS invertebrates, fish biology and the fish of LIS,
and an informative discussion of sharks, and their identification and needs for their
conservation. The field trip in June will be an opportunity for the class to apply some of
the ideas they learned in class. We will do a wetlands walk, a scavenger hunt on the
rocky shore for invertebrates, a study of invasive crabs, and some seine netting on the
sandy beach. This is a trip that parents should plan on attending to help with
supervision and students should wear swim suits and be comfortable around water if
the would like to help seining. That said, if a student wants no part of getting wet, they
can still enjoy themselves. I am also prepared to open spots on the trip for students that
did not take the class to still go to the beach. The minimum age for the trip is 11 and
parents should still plan on chaperoning their kids.
The students should be a minimum of 12 years old and should have some solid science
experience. A curious and courageous demeanor is also helpful!
The content of the class is mid-high school level. I will make every attempt to present
information in a manner that will be accessible to all students, but some topics are more
abstract than others. Marine Biology is an interdisciplinary science, meaning that I will
be touching on physics, chemistry, geology and biology. I will occasionally give the
students something to work on at home for the next class. This isn’t required work, but
will prep them for the coming week.
Class 12 and up firm. Trip 11 and up firm. Ages noted above are firm. One thing I
would like to avoid is families coming on the trip with several younger children who
want to participate and detract from the utility of paying students.

Introduction to Genetics
Ian Gibson
This class will introduce students to the science of heredity. Topics will include the
principle of dominance, traits and alleles, Mendelian genetics, chromosomes and DNA,
genetic disorders, protein synthesis and genetic technology. There are activities related
to all topics, including family pedigrees and DNA model.
Students should be a minimum of 12 years old and have an introductory level of
knowledge in biology, especially cells.
The class is fairly rigorous and fast paced as there is a good deal of material to be
covered. I do give the students take-home work that is designed to build on current
