Translating Words to Equations
First – Expression in 2 Variables
1. Let L represent the larger of two numbers and S the smaller. Write an algebraic expression for:
(a) the sum of the numbers
(b) six times the larger plus two times the smaller
(c) the larger subtracted from five times the smaller
2. A fitness centre charges an initiation fee of $i, plus a monthly charge of $m. Write an algebraic expression
to show how much it costs to be a member for:
(a) 7 months
(b) 15 months
3. Tickets to a college swim meet cost $10 for general admission and $5 for students. There are
g general admission tickets and S student tickets sold. Write algebraic expressions for:
(a) the total number of tickets sold
(b) the money earned from general admission tickets
(c) the money earned from student admission tickets
(d) total money from all tickets sold
4. Write expressions to show the value of d dimes and q quarters in:
(a) pennies
(b) dollars
Second - Equations in Two Variables
Introduce variables and translate each statement into an equation with two variables
1. The sum of the length and width of a basketball court is 40 m.
length = L
width = W
“sum” means +
“is” means =
L + W = 40
2. Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India for 7 years less than twice the number of years that
Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of Great Britain.
Gandhi = G
Thatcher = T
3. In Costco they sell bicycles and tricycles. The total number of wheels is 61.
Bike = B
Tri = T
Third - Homework – System of Equations (2 equations that have 2 variables)
ex The play sold x tickets for adults and y tickets for children.
(a) The total number of tickets sold was 256. Write an equation that relates x and y to total tickets sold.
(b) Tickets for adults cost $5 and for children $2. The total receipts were $767. Write an equation that
relates x and y to total receipts.
HOMEWORK
Choose variables to represent items and write 2 equations that contain 2 variables.
1. Picasso and Renoir produced a total of 295 paintings. Picasso accounted for 11 more of this total than
Renoir.

2. The area of Regina is two thirds of the area of Calgary. The difference in the areas of the two cities is
1700km2.

3. Balcony seats for a show cost $10 and floor level seats cost $15. The total number of tickets sold was
331. The total revenue from sales was $3915.
