Ch10.3 & 11: Forces and Newton’s Laws We will be studying many things in the force unit (which actually covers chapter 10.3 and chapter 11 in the book): Balanced and unbalanced forces Friction and air resistance Newton’s Three Laws of Motion Newton’s Law of Gravity Applications for these laws in linear motion Free Body Diagrams Vectors There are two parts to assessing this unit. One will be some kind of objective paper and pencil test over the material. There will be multiple choice, matching, diagrams, drawings etc. including some physics problems for you to interpret, solve and explain. The second part is part of the slow car project, where you build a car, take some baseline data and then modify the car outside of class to run as slowly as possible without stopping. You will be graded on the modifications, the “slowness” and the analysis of motion, which will include topics from Ch 10 (speed, velocity and acceleration), Ch 11 (forces) and Ch 12 (energy). Vocab checklist + if you’re an expert (can explain to someone else) if you’ve heard of it (and know a little) 0 if you’ve never heard of it _____ force _____ _____ net force _____ _____ balanced force _____ _____ unbalanced force _____ _____ friction _____ _____ static friction _____ _____ kinetic friction _____ _____ rolling friction _____ _____ sliding friction _____ _____ gravity _____ _____ inertia _____ _____ Newtons _____ _____ weight _____ _____ free fall _____ _____ terminal velocity _____ _____ action force _____ _____ reaction force _____ _____ force pair _____ _____ g _____ _____ Newton’s 1st Law _____ _____ Newton’s 2nd Law _____ _____ Law of Universal Gravity _____ _____ Newton’s 3rd Law _____ _____ vector _____ _____ resultant _____ _____ normal _____ Learning Targets (Skills) _____ Discuss whether friction is good or bad in a given situation (10.3) _____ Describe ways to increase or decrease friction (10.3) _____ Recognize that a net force is the sum of all forces acting on an object (10.3) _____ Recognize that unbalanced forces cause accelerations (changes in motion) (10.3) _____ Recognize that an object experiencing balanced forces may be at rest or moving with a constant velocity (10.3) _____ State all three of Newton’s Laws of Motion (11.1, 11.3) _____ Apply Newton’s Laws to explain a variety of real life examples of force and motion (be able to do this with and without friction as a factor) (11.1, 11.3) _____ Describe the relationship between inertia and mass (11.1) _____ Use Newton’s Second Law in problem solving situations (11.1) _____ Recognize that all forces exist as pairs (11.3) _____ Recognize that action-reaction pairs act on different objects at the same time (11.3) _____ Identify that action-reaction pairs act in opposite directions with equal strength (11.3) _____ Differentiate between mass and weight (11.2) _____ Given mass, calculate weight (11.2) _____ Explain the concept of free fall, with examples (11.2) _____ Represent vector quantities in graphic form, using arrows (in class) _____ Add vector quantities together (in class) _____ Draw/interpret force diagrams (free body diagrams) for given examples of motion (in class)
