Chapter 15 – Paths of Prayer
PRAYER
OPENING
LESSON
 Which type of prayer, vocal or contemplative, do you find the most spiritually beneficial? Why does this
form of prayer appeal particularly to you? Write down some of your thoughts about prayer. Then
consider why it is important for us as Catholics to participate in both types of prayer. Finally, pray to God
to ask him for His blessing on yourself, on those you love, and on the Church community.
ACTIVITIES
 Provide each student with paper and markers (individual activity). Ask them to make their own stained
glass window. Remind them of the original purpose of stained glass windows – to encourage spiritual
growth for those who could not read or understand the spoken word during Mass. Ideas could include:
Fish (Christ, baptism), Lamb (Jesus, shepherd), Wheat and Grapes (Eucharist), Olive Branch (peace),
Palm Branch (victory, triumph over death), Thorns (suffering, sin), Tree (abundant life). Have the
students write a short prayer based on their drawings. They can either write the prayer on the picture
itself or use the back of the paper.
 Have the students interview each other using the Christmas Questionnaire (sample included). If time
permits, we will take a poll and see what the most popular answer was for favorite Christmas song, etc.
 Create a slideshow of various stained glass windows that remind us of God.
 Review material from the text with the Testing Your Knowledge handout – sample included.
 Review material from the text by playing Quiz Bowl. Divide students into teams. Teacher asks
questions (two samples included). The first team to answer correctly gets a point. The team with the
most points wins.
 Use the 7th Grade Assessment to test knowledge from the semester – sample included.
