Norbury Hall Primary School – Personal, Local and Global Understanding History Skills to be covered each year Understand the history of the UK as a coherent, chronological narrative Understand how Britain has been influenced and been influenced by the wider world. Deploy a historically grounded understanding of abstract terms such as ‘empire’, ‘civilisation’ and ‘parliament’. Understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance and use them to make connections, draw contrasts and identify trends over time. Create their own structured accounts including written narratives. Understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used to make historical claims. Address and sometimes devise historically valid questions. Geography skills to be covered each year Locate the world’s countries using maps to focus on Europe and North and South America, concentrating on environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries and major cities. Name and locate countries and cities of the UK, geographical regions and identifying human and physical characteristics, key topographical features and land use patterns; understand how some of these aspects have changed over time. The position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime / Greenwich Meridian and time zones. Use maps, atlases, globes and digital / computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied. Use the eight points of a compass, four and six-figure grid references, symbols and key (including OS maps) Use fieldwork to observe, measure and record and present the human and physical features in the local area using a range of methods, including sketch maps, plans and graphs, and digital technologies.
