COURSE DESCRIPTION:
FREN 1010 is the first of three sequential courses that teach the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and
writing in French. Students build these skills by watching, listening, and practicing speaking after native
speakers on video, learning vocabulary, verb forms, and grammatical structures of the language presented in the
V-text (virtual textbook), discovering the francophone culture through reading & watching videos, and
practicing what they have learned through Supersite online exercises and quizzes. FREN 1010 covers Units 1-5
in the V-text.

None
RATIONALE:
This course is an elective component in the Academic Transfer Program as well as a general elective for other
interested students.

Beginning French I

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate an elementary level of language
proficiency in French in the skill areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as well as cultural awareness
of the francophone world. In particular, FREN 1010 will prepare the students to do the following things in
French:

Spell French names and words
•
Use good pronunciation and intonation in speaking and reading aloud
•
Use numbers to count, do math, give dates and prices
•
Ask questions with est-ce que, inversion, and tag phrases
•
Ask and answer questions about the time, date and price
•
Greet people and ask personal information (name, age, health, personality and nationality)
•
Express emotions like happiness, desire, shame and fear
•
Make excuses and express regret
•
Express conditions like being hungry, thirsty, hot, cold or lucky
•
Describe people, including both physical and personality traits
•
Talk about one's family and relationships
•
Buy food at a French market, specialty shop or grocery store
•
Use appropriate dinner table phrases and etiquette
•
Know the courses of a French meal and what is typically served for each course
•
Shop for clothes at a department store
•
Express positive or negative opinions about clothing, classes, or food
