SPACE – JOURNEY ACROSS THE SOLAR SYSTEM
Cover light globes and light fittings with cellophane if possible. Construct a space
tunnel or air lock just inside the door so that Joey Scouts come through there when
they come into the hall.
Each Joey Scout to have a special name tag given to them on their entry into the
hall.
Have a silver tarpaulin suspended from the middle of the hall. Attach to this stars
on string, styrofoam balls covered in glitter, a few moons, and the planets.
SPACE – JOURNEY ACROSS THE SOLAR SYSTEM - NIGHT 1
OPENING CEREMONY AND WELCOME
Over the next few nights we are going to be travelling through the Solar System, our
own galaxy. But before we do that we will need to make sure that we can survive in
space and can go visiting some of the planets in our galaxy. Let us start by:Activity: Space Helmets
1 ice-cream container for each Joey Scout, aluminium foil, sticky tape, scissors,
cellophane, name label for each Joey Scout.
Pre-cut a rectangular slot in the front of the containers. Have the Joey Scouts cover the
outside of their helmets with aluminium foil. Then cover the slot with cellophane. The
Joey Scouts stick their names on the helmet above the rectangular slot.
Activity: Spacesuits
1 black garbage bag for each Joey Scout, name label, holographic Australian flag,
holographic stars and moons, scissors, name label for each Joey Scout.
Hold the garbage bag upside down so that the sealed end is at the top and then find the
centre along the seam. Cut a hole in the seam, large enough for a head to go through.
Cut a slit in either side of the plastic bag, approximately 5 centimetres down from the
seam, large enough for a child to place their arms through. This can now be slipped over
the child and worn like a T-shirt. Stick the stars and moons, etc. on their spacesuits.
Game: Build a Space Ship
1 chair per space ship crew member, 1 large double bed sheet or similar, 1 torch
Divide Joey Scouts into teams comprising maximum of 6 children and 1 leader/adult. Joey
Scouts stand at one end of the hall in their teams. Place the chairs and sheet next to each
team. On a signal the first Joey Scout take a chair and races down to the opposite end of
the hall and places it in such a way that the back part of the chair faces outwards towards
the walls of the hall, the seat part facing into the circle. The Joey Scout races back to their
team and the second Joey Scout repeats the process, placing their chair next to the first
but in such a way that when all of the chairs have been taken down they will form a circle
large enough to fit seven people inside. When the last member of each team has taken
down their chair, the first Joey Scout races down and sits inside the circle of chairs, then
the second Joey Scout until all the Joey Scouts are sitting inside the circle of chairs. The
Leader/Adult assigned to each team then takes the sheet and lies it over the chairs in such
a way that it forms a cover over the children. The Leader/Adult then gets inside the
“spaceship” and then readies it to blast off to outer space. Leaders/Adults and Joey
Scouts count down 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, BLAST OFF!!!!!
Have music playing in the background as the spaceship travels through the solar system.
For example, Star Wars by John Williams (CD), The Planets by Gustav Holst (CD), Space
Oddessey 2001 (CD). Ask question like “Can they see the other planets and what are
they”. Approaching the Moon. Spaceship comes in to land. Leaders and Joey Scouts
disembark to start our adventure on the Moon.
Activity: Moon Rocks (Chocolate Crackles)
Rice bubbles, copha, cocoa, icing sugar, silver balls, chocolate melts, white chocolate
melts, silver patty pans,
Follow recipe and mix together. Put into patty pans, sprinkle with silver balls and
refrigerate. Hand out one to each Joey Scout at the end of the night.
Game: Dark side of the Moon
Have everyone take off their shoes and place them in the middle of the floor. Turn out the
lights. On “go” the Joey Scouts must feel for their shoes and put them on. It is a good idea
to have some light showing as some Joeys are afraid of the dark and it can be frustrating
for the younger Joeys so help where needed.
Activity: Man in the Moon
Divide Joey Scouts into 2 teams. Give each team a piece of paper folded into four across
the paper. The first person in the team draws a head on the top of the paper then folds it
under, hands it onto the next Joey who draws the arms and a body. That Joey folds that
under and the next Joey draws legs. The last Joey draws the feet. The paper is unfolded
and the picture of the Man in the Moon is revealed.
Activity: Star bright, star light, I see a star tonight
Draw star shapes and the moon on a piece of white paper with a white candle and then
paint over the paper with black or very dark blue paint and see the stars twinkle at night.
Hang up to dry and pin up on the Joey Scouts noticeboard.
Game: Space salad
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune, Pluto, Earth, Uranus
Solar System – all run
Fall into a Black Hole – last back
In teams, the first Joey is Mercury, the second Venus, and so on through all of the planets.
When their planet is called out that Joey runs to the end of the hall and back. When “Solar
System” is called everyone runs. The last one to run back falls into a Black Hole.
Game: Moon volleyball
Played the same as ordinary volleyball but with a balloon to simulate less gravity on the
moon.
From the Moon we can see all out and about of our galaxy. The stars stretch out like a
road or highway. The Ancient Greeks and even our early Aboriginal people thought of
these stars as the “Milky Way”. When you go outside at night you will be able to see many
stars but if you go out to the country at night you can see stars stretching all across the
night sky for miles. It is really magical. Here is a “Milky Way” to remind you to look for the
stars at night.

OPENING CEREMONY AND WELCOME
Welcome back everyone, remember last week when we landed on the Moon and
spent some time there. Well we must keep going on our journey through our
galaxy. Let's get ready for blast off. Leaders/Adults and Joey Scouts count down
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, BLAST OFF!!!!! Have music playing in the background as
the spaceship travels through the solar system. For example, Star Wars by John
Williams (CD), The Planets by Gustav Holst (CD), Space Oddessey 2001 (CD). Ask
question like “Can they see the other planets and what are they”
Wow we have reached Mars but we won't have time to stop. What! The Martians are
having a bad day today, they don't want us to come and visit. They are bombarding
the Spaceship with “Mars” bars. (Parent helper to do) Let us get out of Martian
airspace. Continue flying through the Solar System.
As the spaceship travels through the Solar System have the Parent Helper and other
Leaders pelt the spaceship with “Asteroids”. We will need to get through the
Asteroid belt to get to Jupiter and Saturn. Talk about the ride as being bumpy, take
evasive action, etc.
We have to keep flying through space. Flying past Jupiter, friendly Jupiter beings
share with us “Jupiter Jellies”. Enjoy and come back another time to visit us they
say.
We have nearly reached our destination for tonight. Saturn. Spaceship comes in to
land. Leaders and Joey Scouts disembark.
Game: Saturn's Rings
1 hoop for each Joey Scouts, 1 chair per team
Divide Joey Scouts into 2 teams. Teams stand at one end of the hall. In front of each
team, place a chair in such a way that the back of the chair is facing towards the team.
One at a time each Joey Scout tries to throw their hoop over the back of the chair in front
of their team. They can lean forward but must not move their feet. See which team can
get the most rings around Saturn. Play again but this time increase the distance between
each team and the chair.
Game: Alien Grab
Joey Scouts stand at one end of the hall. Two leaders/adults stand about half way down
the length of the hall with a gap of about a metre between them. The leaders/adults are
the “Aliens”. The Joey Scouts must try to get past them. Joey Scout who are caught can
become an “Alien” or else go back to the main group of Joey Scouts.
Game: Moving stars
Foil milk bottle tops, juice bottle tops, chalk, masking tape
Scatter over the floor of the hall the bottle tops. Divide the hall into four with chalk or
masking tape lines and number the squares 1 – 4. Use 2 dice, roll them and whatever
number has been rolled is the number of stars the Joey Scouts must collect. Then call out
a square number. The Joeys must put the right amount of stars in the correct square. If
you have enough bottle tops you can let each Joey gather their own stars or you can do it
in teams.
Activity: Saturn's Rings
3 metres of string or wool, 2 supermarket carry bags for each Joey Scouts, burger rings,
cheezels,
Cut lengths of string/wool into 30cms. Tie the lengths of string/wool to the long piece of
string so that they are evenly space along its length but making sure that there is enough
room at each end for a leader to hold onto. Tie the other end of each short length with a
burger ring or cheezel. Continue until there are plenty of burger rings and cheezels along
the length of the string/wool.
Each Joey Scout is to stand at one end of the hall. Each Joey Scout is to be given 2
plastic bags. Two Leaders/adults hold the string with the burger rings and cheezels
attached at the other end of the hall. On a signal from a Leader, the Joey Scouts must sit
in one of their plastic bags and their feet in the second. They must sit on their bottoms,
and with their hands on their heads, they must slide up to the other end of the hall and
grab a burger ring or cheezel off the string without using their hands. The game ends
when all the Joey Scouts have eaten all of the burger rings and cheezels.
Game: Jump the planet
Using a long rope with a bean bag attached spin the rope around in a circle while the Joey
Scouts attempt to jump over the planet spinning around. How many times can the planet
rotate before it is stopped? Play until each Joey Scout has been eliminated.
Game: Catch a falling star
Small bean bag, stocking or onion bag, some crepe streamers
Put a bean bag in a stocking. At the opening end tie some streamers of different lengths.
This is your falling star. Joey Scouts stand in a circle and throw the falling star from one to
another using only the stocking part and not the ball part. Or have the Joey Scouts in the
middle of the hall and the Leaders throw the falling star to each other while the Joeys
attempt to catch it.

Opening Ceremony and Welcome Joey Scouts
Welcome back everyone, remember last week when we landed on the Saturn and spent
some time there. Well we must keep going on our journey through our galaxy. Let's get
ready for blast off. Leaders/Adults and Joey Scouts count down 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1,
BLAST OFF!!!!! Have music playing in the background as the spaceship travels through
the solar system. For example, Star Wars by John Williams (CD), The Planets by Gustav
Holst (CD), Space Oddessey 2001 (CD). Ask question like “Can they see the other
planets and what are they” Ooh look we are flying past Uranus and now Neptune.
We are going to have a quick stop off at Pluto. Though we will have to rug up as it is very
very cold on Pluto. Don't forget to put on your winter woollies.
Game: Skating on Pluto
2 empty Tissue boxes for each Joey Scout.
Divide Joey Scouts into two teams. Using large tissue boxes Joey Scouts run relay races
on the cold ice of Pluto. What does it feel like? The astronauts wore big bulky boots when
they walked on the Moon. So our Pluto shoes feel very similar.
Well we must keep going as we have a long way to get home. Let's get ready for blast off.

We are going to swing really wide and come back towards the Sun. It is going to get very
very hot so we will need to take off our winter woollies and put lots of sunscreen on as well
as our special sunglasses. (Pretend to do this)
We are travelling past Mercury and Venus. Ooh look!
Hip hip hooray there is Earth.
Let's get ready for a smooth landing. Leaders and Joey Scouts disembark.
Remember all of those stars that we saw as we went on our journey. Let's see if we can
do something fun to help us remember them.
Activity: Constellation Box
1 shoebox with detachable lid for each Joey Scout, flashlight, scissors, black construction
paper or card, pins, sticky tape, printouts of the constellations of the Southern hemisphere
(especially the Southern Cross, Orion, the False Cross, etc)
Leaving the cover on the box, remove one end of the box. Using this cut piece cut out a
piece of the black construction paper the same size. Cut an opening the size of the
flashlight in the opposite end.
Using the printouts, place one over the black construction paper and using the pin prick or
punch tiny holes in paper. This becomes your constellation card. Try to keep the holes
round and tidy. Slot the constellation card over the open end of the box. Place the
flashlight through the opening in the other end of the box. Before turning on the flashlight,
darken the room. The light will shine through the holes and make the stars light up.
Change the constellation card over and you will have a different set of stars to look at each
time. Have fun.
Activity: Space Cake and Sunny Sodas
Space cake, ice-cream, yellow and orange lemonade, plastic cups, paper plates
Joey Scouts enjoy a piece of Space Cake and sip sunny sodas as they finish their journey
through the Solar System.
Next week we will have a construction night. We are going to make robots and anything
else to do with space if you like. Goodnight and have a good week.

Extras
Rockets (like Skittles)
6 skittles per team, basketball or bean bags.
Attach fins and pointy cone to PET bottles. Paint PET bottles to look like rockets. Play as
for skittles. Divide Joey Scouts into 2 teams.
Game: Flying saucer
1 Frisbee per team, even number of bean bags divided between the teams.
Divide Joey Scouts into 2 teams. Place an upside down frisbee on the floor. Let the Joey
Scouts take turns tossing the asteroids (bean bags) into their flying saucer from 10 feet
away. The team that lands the most asteroids inside the saucer are the winners.
Craft: Flying saucers
Round paper plates, staples, sticky tape, textas, stickers,
Each Joey Scout is given 2 paper plates, the eating surfaces are put together and the
edges stapled or taped. Scrunch up newspaper and stuff the saucers to given them a
more solid look. Decorate using textas, stickers, etc.
Game: Flying saucers take off
Using the saucers made in the craft activity conduct test flights. Who can throw their craft
the longest distance. Who can make it land in a certain spot. Draw circles (planets) on
the floor and allot points for landing on particular planets.
Game: Knock down the rocket
10 aluminium cans, uncrushed and empty
Joey Scouts stand in a circle holding hands. In the middle of the circle is a rocket tower of
cans about waist high. The object is to try and get someone else in the circle to
accidentally knock over the rocket without knocking it over yourself. Without letting go of
hands Joey Scouts run in and out trying to pull the other side of the circle to knock over the
rocket.
Cooking activity: Stars
Have pre-made biscuit mix ready to roll out. Use star cookie cutters to cut shape and
cover with sprinkles. Bake for 15 mins in moderate oven. Cool on trays.
Game: Saturn & Satellites
Divide Joey Scouts into 2 teams. They face each other in the centre of the hall about 1 ½
m apart. One team is “Saturn”. The other is “Satellites”. Call one of these names. You
can add suspense by drawing out the name eg. sat .......urn. The team with the name
called runs to touch the wall behind them before they are tagged by the other team. Those
tagged become part of the team that tagged them. The game is over when one team has
caught all of its opponents.
Game: Astronaut art relay
1 large sheet of paper per team, textas, masking tape
Divide Joey Scouts into 2 teams. In front of each team is a large sheet of paper hung on
the wall with masking tape. Have textas placed on a chair in a container ready to be used.
On a given signal, the first Joey Scout from each team runs to the paper, picks a texta and
draws a specified part of the astronaut. Then puts the textas down and runs back to the
next Joey Scout. This Joey Scouts then adds another part of the astronaut. First team
finished wins. Compare pictures. How good are they? Great effort.
Variation. teams can decide before hand who draws what to make a complete picture.
Game: Alien art circle
Joey Scouts form a circle or sit around a table in a circle. Give each Joey Scout a texta
and paper. Each starts by drawing a head. Then each Joey moves one space to the left –
leaving the paper behind. Each draws the next part of the aliens anatomy and again
moves one space to the left. This cycle continues until each Joey as moved completely
around the circle or the alien has been completed on each paper.
Activity: In the dark
Give each Joey Scout a piece of paper and a pencil. Have them draw a simple design and
then turn off the light and tell them to draw the same thing again. They'll be surprised by
the results!
Game: Meteorites
4 aluminium pie plates, 4 bean bags
Joey Scouts line up each side of the hall. They have
Craft: Galaxies
Card, glitter, glue stick, scissors, tray, string, pencil
Joey Scouts collect a piece of card and straw a spiral on it. Then use the glue stick to
spread a layer of glue following the outline of the spiral. They sprinkle glitter over the glue
and shake excess off in the tray. Allow to dry. Encourage them to give their galaxy a
name and prick a small hole at the top of the card and hang their galaxy.
Craft: Spaceships or UFOs
paper plates, paper bowls, stickers, PVA glue, pots, small brushes, textas, stapler,
Joey Scouts attach an upturned paper bowl to the paper plate with PVA glue. Staple
another paper plate with eating sides touching to the paper plate. Decorate with textas,
and stickers. Joey Scouts might like to draw astronauts or aliens inside their spaceship.
When complete and dry Joey Scouts can fly their spaceships.
Craft: Solar System mobile
Wire, flexible enough to form a circle but with enough stiffness to hold mobile pieces,
pictures or photocopies of planets and the sun. string, scissors,
Joey Scouts form a circle with their wire. They tie a piece of string across the diameter.
Then tie lengths of string to each of the planets and then tie them on in order to their
mobile all ready to hang up.
Activity: Space mural
Long length of paper, paint in different colours, paint brushes, pots or youghurt containers,
pencils
Roll out the paper and spread the paint pots around the outside. Joey Scouts to draw
space things on the paper then they can start painting them. Hang somewhere to dry.
Hang up the mural the following week for them to see how great their art looks.
Actvity: Excursion to the Planetarium at Scienceworks.
Contact the Planetarium and make a booking. Send out flyers to all of the parents with
booking slip attached. Details should include place, time of departure from Hall and
Planetarium, time of arrival at Planetarium and Hall, cost, transport, lunch arrangements,
Leaders going, contact numbers for Planetarium and Leaders, etc.
