Case Study 1
4-legged Physio is a veterinary clinic that provides physiotherapy and acupuncture treatments to dogs and
cats. Part of the cost is covered by pet insurance plans. The treatments are given to the animals during an
appointment with a veterinarian who is licensed to practice one of these two specialties. However, a client has
to have his/her animal referred to 4-legged Physio by the animal’s veterinarian.
If a veterinarian feels that an animal will benefit from physiotherapy or acupuncture, they have their vet tech
call 4-legged Physio to make an appointment. The vet tech makes the call because they can explain the
diagnosis made on the animal. The vet tech makes the appointment and confirms the date and time with the
client. As well, the vet tech prepares a form which the veterinarian signs and gives to the client. When the
client arrives at 4-legged Physio, they give the form to the receptionist. The receptionist gives the client a
customer profile to fill in.
The animal’s record has already been started when the original appointment was made. The receptionist pulls
the animal’s chart (contained in a file folder) and adds the client profile to the file folder.
After the appointment, during which the veterinarian treats the patient, the veterinarian updates the animal’s
chart and tells the receptionist when to make a follow up appointment. The receptionist enters an
appointment in the appointment book and gives the client a card showing the date and time.
The receptionist then creates an invoice listing the treatments provided during a visit, the cost of these
treatments, the amount covered by insurance, and the amount that the patient’s owner must pay. The owner
can pay with cash, credit card or debit card. Once the payment has been made, the receptionist marks the
invoice paid and gives one copy to the owner and files one copy.
4-legged Physio’s business has grown very quickly because many clients do not want surgery performed on
their pets if at all possible. The veterinarians who are partners in 4-legged Physio graduated from the
University of Guelph at the same time as Dr. Singh and Dr. Marlowe of Pet Vet Animal Clinic. They want to
develop a computer system also because 4-legged Physio’s records are now processed manually. They ask you
to create a PID for an automated system.
Question 1: Positioning
A. The Business Opportunity
/3
The opportunity would be to develop an automated system for 4-legged Physio which currently
keeps its records manually. A centralized system would initially handle the transfer of information
between clinics, scheduling appointments, maintaining client and animal records, and invoicing.

Summer 2011
`1The impact of which is
Unorganized records, slow processing, limits to the business,
dissatisfied customers, frustrated referring veterinarians and
vet techs, overworked receptionist, long waiting time for
appointments
A successful solution would
(3 marks)
Involve a centralized database system which is networked so
that other clinics can send referrals and medical records to 4legged Physio and 4-legged Physio can send treatment
information back to the referring veterinarians,. The system
would allow for easy access and processing of animal charts,
accounts receivable transactions, patient and client records,
and appointment scheduling.

Case Study 2
Animal behaviour experts have told the Toronto Zoo that is needs to relocate its three remaining elephants
Toka, Thika and Iringa to a more suitable and spacious environment. Since 1984, seven elephants have died at
the zoo, four of them in the last four years. If the Toronto Zoo were to enlarge the elephant enclosure it would
cost $16 million. A report prepared by the Toronto Zoo staff suggests the three female elephants should be
moved to another institution accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
Animal activists disagree and say that Toka, Thika and Iringa should be moved to a sanctuary in either California
or Tennessee where they can spend their old age in an 80-acre to 200-acre compound away from humans and
among other elephants. However, these sanctuaries are not accredited under the AZA. The good thing is that
both sides agree that the elephants have to be moved to a more suitable home.
There is not much time for the decision to be made because the three elephants are elderly - Toka is about 41
years old; Thika, 30; Iringa, 42. Even after the decision is made as to where to relocate the elephants, it could
take up to another 2 years to move them safely to their new home. Because of the urgency of the matter, the
Toronto Zoo staff have asked your team to develop a program that will search through all of the AZA accredited
facilities in North America that have between 80 to 200 acre compounds, that can accommodate 3 elephants
immediately, and all of the sanctuaries in North America that, although not accredited by AZA, have a very high
approval rating with zoo veterinarians for the level of care they provide their elephants.
Toronto Zoo staff want you to produce a report listing all of the facilities that will fit a set of criteria they have
drawn up and to rate their strengths and weaknesses in each categories. As well they want you to prepare a
detailed schedule showing exactly how long it will take to get Toka, Thika and Iringa ready for transport to each
facility you have included in the report, the mode of transportation required, the hazards involved in transporting
3 elephants that distance, the number and type of zoo personnel that will be required to accompany the
elephants, the supplies and medical equipment that will be required for the journey and the risk to each elephant
in being transported away from the Toronto Zoo which has been her home since she was young. The staff must
present this data to the full Toronto Zoo board at their meeting in July 2011. At that time the Board will choose
the facility that will be the new home for Toka, Thika and Iringa, enter into negotiations with the chosen facility
to accept them, and begin the plans to actually move them based on the reports that you have produced. There
is a tremendous amount of planning required in order to transport the three elephants to their new home safely
and successfully so the Zoo staff is counting on your team producing a thorough and accurate set of reports.
