Course Title: Advanced Plant and Soil Science Lesson Title: Review of Mitosis and Meiosis TEKS Addressed in Lesson: 130.21(c)(15)(D) http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=5415#Subchapter A Lesson Objectives: The student will be able to 1. Identify the phases of mitosis and meiosis 2. Explain the events of mitosis and meiosis 3. Relate the significance of mitosis and meiosis. Tools and Equipment Student version of the review sheet of mitosis and meiosis. Teacher key of the Mitosis and Meiosis review sheet. Student exam entitled “Mitosis and Meiosis.” Teacher key for the exam Key Terms / Vocabulary mitosis prophase prometaphase metaphase anaphase telophase kinetochore centromere interphase G1 S phase G2 meiosis Interest Approach/Anticipatory Set Prepare to play a review game called “Around the room” question and answer session. Issue the student version entitled “Mitosis and Meiosis review sheet” from Lesson Plan 1 (LP 1) as your source of questions. The teacher key will help the teacher correctly answer the questions. This lesson takes two days. Teaching Plan and Strategy / Presentation of New Material If you have a SmartBoard™ or Promethean™ board, project the diagrams on the review and have the students come to the board and draw, label and explain the phases for the review. Activity/Application/ Student Engagement /Laboratory Assign the student exam entitled “Mitosis and Meiosis” This will be issued the second day. Evaluation / Summary After the review, play paper snowballs. Have the students write a question on a piece of paper. Crunch it up and have a “snowball fight.” When time is called, students pick up the paper, open and share with a partner, Repeat, if time allows.
