TIS LOGO Date Tokyo International School 3-4-22 Mita, Minato-ku, Tokyo 108-1139 Tel: 81-3-5484-1160 Fax: 5484-1139 Website: www.tokois.com Location 2005-11-19 Supersedes Information Sheet TIS Number H0001 Issue 1 Subject: Infection control - Flu Guidelines Page 1 of 3 1.0 Purpose With the increasing risk of a flu pandemic, Tokyo International School is adopting the following general infection control policy. 2.0 Guideline #1 – Student Arrival Students arriving at school with a temperature above 37.5 degrees C / 99.5 degrees F with any of the following symptoms chills/sweats muscle and joint pain cough headache fatigue and weakness sore throat Plus - younger children under 5 years diarrhoea and/or vomiting nasal inflammation 2.1 Guideline #2 – Student Developing Symptoms during the school day Students that develop a temperature above 37.5 degrees C / 99.5 degrees F After arrival at, or during the school day with any of the following symptoms chills/sweats muscle and joint pain cough headache fatigue and weakness sore throat Plus - younger children under 5 years diarrhoea and/or vomiting nasal inflamation 2.2 Action taken by School The parents (or 1st emergency contact should parents not be contactable) will be contacted and requested to collect the student, the student must not return to school until the symptoms have subsided and the body temperature has remained normal (37 degrees C – 98.6 degrees F), without taking any medication for the previous 24 hours. Note #1: Subject to student’s condition, he/she may be issued with a facemask by the nursing staff prior to collection. Note #2: Students that are running fevers over 37.8 degrees C will not be allowed to return home unaccompanied 4.0 Guideline #4 – Medication Parents/guardians should not send medication into school with the student if symptoms are confirmed, the student will not be permitted to attend class unless he or she has fully recovered as per 2.0. 5.0 Guideline #5 - Classroom Hygiene Control Classroom Hygiene control, alcohol based hand wash will be available in all the classrooms, class teachers will at their discretion instruct students to use as required and/or refer student to the nursing staff if they suspect or are concerned with the health of the student. Note #3: Should a parent have concerns with their child using the alcohol based hand wash they must inform the class teacher in writing. 6.0 Guideline #6 – Proactive Health Screening The Nursing staff will visit classrooms during early morning school to evaluate with classroom teachers the health of students. The school will monitor the Avian flu situation via the WHO and Japanese government web sites daily, and keep parents up to date of any changes. ConsequentlyTokyo International School will follow any guidelines and recommendations by the WHO and Japanese government. 8.0 Guideline #8 - Returning Overseas Travellers Parents or student that return to Japan with or develop any flu like symptomswithin 7 days, after travelling to any country that has had a reported, confirmed outbreak of the Avian H5N1 Virus, should quarantine themselves, and contact their medical provider immediately.
