CHC 2D8 World War 1 Research Projects
The Topics
You will choose one of the following topics. Each of the topics has an associated “big question” to
address.





The key battles – What were the key battles of the war? How did Canadian participation in some
of the battles eventually lead to greater Canadian autonomy (independence from Great Britain)?
Technology and War – In what way did technological advances make weapons more deadly and
efficient? What was the impact of these technologies on the outcome of the war?
Opposition to the War – Did opposition to the war, whether at home or on the war front play a
significant role in the outcome of the war?
War in the Trenches – In what way can the contributions of all Canadian foot soldiers, whether
killed, injured or unhurt, be seen as a sacrifice that was worth it? Or was it a tragic waste of life?
War on the Homefront – How did total war affect the citizens of Canada? What was the long term
impact (after the war had ended) of this citizen and government involvement on Canadian society.
The Final Products
You will choose one of the following products to creatively address the topic and the “big question” above.
Graphic Novel – using comic life on school computers or original hand drawings
Essay – an essay of no more than 5 paragraphs including an introduction and conclusion
Play – a script for a play (may include an audio, video taped or live performance)
PowerPoint slideshow/Flash movie – images and descriptive narrative
Short Story – no more than 5 pages
Folding Board (3 panel) Display – images and descriptive narrative
In addition you will write one argumentative paragraph that explains, using 3 specific pieces of factual
evidence that you included, how your product addresses the “big question”.
