THE CRIME The rain fell violently on the night of April 1, 2010. A dinner party was being held at the home of an eccentric man, Mr. Rellik. Mr. Rellik was a very mysterious man that none of the guests of the dinner party had ever met. The only thing they knew was that they had were mailed an invitation that stated that it would be in their best interest to attend since each one of them was paying “dues” that was keeping a dark secret out of the public eye. 7:00 pm – Mr. Rellik escorted Pam SMITH, Tracy Jordan, Kevin Russo, Matthew Stubbs, and Gerald Wright to the dinner table. Although the guests didn’t know it, each person’s life has been affected by Mr. Rellik 7:30 pm – The host and guests sat down to a dinner of tomato soup, fresh salad, prime rib, backed potato and small talk. 7:35 pm – A person in the neighborhood was walking their dog and could see a dark figure dragging a large object from the house that looked like a body. She ran back with her dog to go call the police. 7:43 pm – The cops arrive, but the entire house had been engulfed by flames. Evidence Collected: -The charred remains of four individuals were discovered. - A knife was found outside in a garbage can. The karyotype of the blood found on the knife’s blade is included, along with the karyotypes of all individuals at the crime scene that night. No fingerprints were found on the knife. - In the area where the neighbor told police she saw the dark figure be dragged, which she said might have been a body , blood was discovered. To determine whose blood this is, a gel electrophoresis may be done. Part 1: Bones Four sets of skeletons were found in the house after firefighters put out the blaze. One skeleton was immediately identified based on the small stature of the bones. The other three sets of bones need to be identified, so the family members may be notified. The following descriptions of the individuals suspected of being at this party were described by their closest relatives: Tracy Jordan - Asian female, 35 years old, approximately 5’ tall Matthew Stubbs – Black male, 23 years old, approximately 5’4’’ tall Pam Smith – White female, 24 years old, approximately 5’8’’ Gerald Wright – White male, 27 years old, approximately 4’2’’ Mr. Rellik – White male, 54 years old, approximately 5’ 7’’ Kevin Russo – White male, 30, approximately 6’3’’ Part 2 – Karyotype Match the person from the dinner party to the evidence found on that night. The chromosomes of all individuals at the party have been included in your packet. Note: Any chromosomes that are lost or drawn in will not count and thus will not be able to be used as evidence for your case. How would you feel if you were being tried and a forensic scientist just hand drew a chromosome on your karyotype? Be careful with your cutouts. This is a time consuming process, so you may want to do some of this work at home. Part 3: Blood Typing The following individuals will be part of your pedigree analysis. It is your job to determine their blood type. This information MUST be included on your pedigree. Then with this given information you can then start to write the POTENTIAL blood types of the people that were not actually tested in this part. For this portion, you are to: 1. Create a typed chart that you can present which will easily show the different blood types for each of the individuals. 2. Determine ALL possible blood types for the SIX suspects. That information will be included on a table given to you in the lab. You should be able to figure out possible blood types AFTER you complete the pedigrees below and determine the six suspects and their relations to the people being tested in Part 2. The individuals you will be testing: Thomas Mustard, Jerry, Jerry’s Parents, Joan, Jim Butts, Rita, Tina, Tawny, Susan, Tony, Steve Stubbs, Kathy, Nina, Nancy, Dominic, Peebles, Heather, Veronica, Nadia, Joe Part 4: Pedigree analysis Read the following six stories and put together a pedigree. You will notice that one individual ties many of these stories together. Therefore it is your job to create ONE large pedigree that includes all six of these stories. My only suggestion is to find out the four pairs of parents in this story and set them along the first generation. You will have to cross lines through the pedigree. Where this is unavoidable, when two lines cross draw a half circle as you cross through. (see example on next page) The pedigrees should have the following information traced through (as much as possible): 1.) Blood Types 2.) Marfan Syndrome (Recessive) – Color those that suffer from Marfan’s Syndrome – BLUE! (Those that MUST be carriers, should be shaded in half-blue) 3.) Dwarfism (Autsomal Dominant) – Color those that are dwarf – RED!! 4.) Huntington (Dominant) – Color those that have Huntington’s – YELLOW Tracy Jordan’s Story: Thomas Mustard returned from World War II and married his high school sweetheart, Betty Basil. The couple had three children: Thomas Jr., Kathy, and Dominic. At the age of 18, Thomas Jr. changed his name to Thomas Sandstone and ran away from home. Thomas never was heard from again. Kathy married Jerry Turner and Dominic married Susan Spice. After two years of trying, Kathy had a miscarriage. Undaunted, they tried again, and this time they were blessed with Tracy. On a wild night, in a fit of anger, Kathy Mustard killed her husband and her brother, Dominic, killed his wife to collect on life insurance. Determine the blood types of the individuals in this story. There has been no incidence of Huntington’s Disease or Marfan’s syndrome in this family. Kevin Russo Joe Granite, an infantry man from World War II, met Sarah Sand in the V.A. hospital after he returned from the war. Sarah is a very tall woman with long fingers. Sarah and Joe married and tried to have a child, but their first died during labor due to an intoxicated doctor. After two years of severe depression, the couple tried again and this time they had identical twin girls: Joan and June. Sadly, Sarah died when her aorta burst during labor. Later it was determined that she had Marfan’s syndrome. June married a man named Thomas Sandstone. Thomas and June had two children: Peebles (a female) and KEVIN (a tall, slender man who was double jointed). In a bizarre love triangle, Thomas killed Joan and Peebles. Embarrassed about his father’s actions, KEVIN changed his last name to Fleckstone. KEVIN’s blood type is the same as his father’s. KEVIN was later engaged to Tracy Jordan. Tracy Jordan has recently been getting death threats, claiming that there is a “hit” out on her. Matthew Stubs’ Story: Jimmy Butts, an older tank drive from the second world war, rejoined his wife, Rita and four children: Tina, Tawny, Molly, and Tony. Tina and Tawny became nuns while Tony died in a bizarre gardening accident (after he married and had a child). Tall, beautiful Molly married Steve Stubs. Steve and Molly had two children: Veronica and Matthew. Matthew’s blood type was like neither of his parents or grandfather. Unfortunately, Steve had Huntington’s disease. While Steve was deteriorating, Molly had an affair with a man named Thomas Sandstone. A male child was the result of this affair, but Thomas took this child to an adoption agency immediately after his birth. Ironically Molly Stubs died from Huntington’s disease 15 years after the death of her husband. Matthew was engaged to Peebles Sandstone and has been very despondent since her murder. Lately he has been seen with Pam SMITH. Gerald Wright’s Story: Gerald doesn’t know much about his family history. You see, Gerald was adopted by the Wright family when she was six months old. This is what he says he knows: Gerald’s father was Thomas Sandstone and his mother was Molly Stubbs. He known that his mother died from Huntington’s disease (he thinks he may have the disease) and he knows that he has two half-sister’s and two half-brother’s, but he does not know their names. Gerald is an achondroplasic dwarf with a heterozygous blood type, who has fallen deeply in love with Pam SMITH. Pam Smith’s Story: Greg Smith couldn’t fight in the “war to end all wars.” It turns out that Greg had poor eyesight, flat feet and a low IQ. He and his wife, Heather had two children: Nina and Nancy. Nina had an affair with Thomas Sandstone when she was 19 years old. Their child, Nadia, was kidnapped and murdered when she was 3 years old. After the news, Nina went off the deep end and lost her mind. She is now institutionalized with no hope for release. Nancy married Tony Butts and they had Pam. Tony died in a bizarre gardening accident when Pam was 3. Since Pam was raised by her mother, she took the last name of Smith. Pam has the same blood type as her grandfather. Ironically, after Tony died, they did a blood test which showed that he may have had Huntington’s disease. Pam, a jealous woman, knows that Gerald Wright has a thing for her but she feels that she can’t love a dwarf who may have Huntington’s disease. Gerald understands why she can’t love a dwarf. None of her grandparents are dwarfs. Gerald has a grandfather that is a dwarf. Kevin Russo is the one that she adores. Mr. Rellik’s Story: Mr. Rellik is a very mysterious man. He says that he was recently released from prison and has changed his name. He claimed to have many children by different women. While in jail, he had been in correspondence with an unidentified person to kill Tracy Jordan. Mr. Rellik was going to go to the police with the identity of this person the day after the party because he did not want to go back to jail. Part 5: Gel Electrophoresis Listen to the directions explained by the teacher. Using the evidence collected at the crime scene, you are going to compare the results of the sample to all individuals that were present at the dinner party. Warrants were obtained to retrieve personal items from everyone’s houses so DNA could be recovered. Here is what you need to hand in for EACH part: 1. ) A chart that has the skeleton number, race of individual, possible height, sex of the person, and possible age, and the identification of that skeleton with the person from the party. Attach all of the charts that you filled in during the bones lab. But the final chart should be a well organized summation of the evidence. 2. ) You have been given the karyotypes of individuals that were at the party. Refer to the evidence and you must complete a karyotype for any person of the same gender as the one collected from the evidence. 3.) A clear chart that has a list of the names that you tested and the exact blood type that they must be. Determine the possible blood types of those involved with the dinner party based upon all of the relatives. 4.) A pedigree which is to be NEATLY drawn. It may take at least one rough draft pedigree before you get to redraw it for the neatness. I do not want to see eraser marks all over the pedigree. The pedigree is to be done with the correct symbols and notations. a. The pedigree should contain the following information: i. Blood Types of any individual that you know or could determine using the inheritance of blood typing. ii. Individuals that have Marfans Syndrome (color according, see part D) iii. Individuals that have Huntington’s Disease (color according, see part D) iv. Individuals that are dwarf (color accordingly, see part D) 5.) A rough sketch (done on the computer) of the gel that you produced or an actual picture that you took with a camera or cell phone. The lanes should be clearly labeled with the individual whose DNA could be found in that well. Below the sketch, you are to determine which individuals you are able to rule out as being suspects of the crime. You will be asked in your prosecution trial what gave you that conclusion. If you cannot answer this question, your entire evidence from gel electrophoresis will be thrown out.
